Returned My Band 2, Now What?

I probably should have bought the Blaze but ruled it out due to no GPS.

I've had my Fitbit Charge 2 for nearly 2 weeks now.

Here's what I think:

  • The stock wrist strap if awful. I found it difficult to put on and hard to adjust. I replaced it with a steel strap with magnet closure and I like that a whole lot better. $16 on Amazon. The fact that is has easily replaceable straps beats the MS Band.
  • Display is inferior to the MS Band (lower resolution I think, B&W rather than color), also a bit less configurable, but is plenty bright, I can read it without glasses, and it does get the job done.
  • Step count works fine.
  • Stair climb count works fine.
  • Sleep tracking works about the same as "auto sleep track" on the MS Band. Unlike the MS Band there is no way to tell the FB when you are going to bed.
  • Phone app is different but in aggregate about the same as with the MS Band.
  • Integration with Lose It food / calorie tracker on my phone is about the same.
  • Haptic alarms work about the same as the MS Band as a morning wake-up alarm.
  • Haptic alarms work significantly better than MS Band in that you can have more than one (e.g. weekday and weekend). But you can only disable or enable them from the FB itself, they must be set up with the phone app.
  • Stopwatch on the FB is about the same as MS Band.
  • Countdown timer on the FB is missing entirely, simply not there. As you would need to configure it from the phone app anyway that makes a little sense I suppose. If you have you phone to have the app you have the phone's timer capability. Still, I'd think that having several pre-selected countdown intervals available on the FB would not be hard to do.
  • Heart rate works about the same as with the MS Band. Reliable at lower exertion levels, increasingly overstates beats per minute as you get above about 120 BPM.
  • Exercise tracking / calorie estimates works about the same as with the MS Band.
  • Walk / hike / run route tracking using "connected GPS" (the phone's GPS) works great. Only a small drain on the FB battery or the phone battery.
  • Battery life blows away the MS Band. I haven't charged my FB in 4 days and it still has 35% remaining.
  • Cost $150 compared to $250 for the MS Band 2.

Overall I am very pleased with the Fitbit Charge 2 and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for the same feature set I was looking for.

Thanks again, Dave, for the recommendation.

That shows promise. I don't think quality when I think of Casio though.

Casio makes great watches.  I have a databank watch that is still running on the same battery after 10 years.  Also they have the tough solar watches which you never have to charge since there is a solar panel built into the face.  They are also the only watches I have found that use the atomic time signal.  I have always been annoyed by a watch losing or gaining time.

If Casio can take the Band and integrate everything into the watch body, they will fix most of the bands problems.  The only other problem would still be battery life and I figure they might be able to help there.

Just out of interest, what do you think of when you think of Microsoft?

Better quality than Casio. A lot better. If it wasn't for the battery problems the band 2 was perfect. They were so close and then gave up. I hope Casio can improve on our with a similar if not the same design.

I know what you mean, I was waiting for the Band 3, as per standard MS 3rd version tends to be where they hit the right point, then, pop, nothing...
