Telescope for Periscope

Twitter finally answered Meercat by releaseing Periscope.  If you haven't been reading the news or don't have an iOS device this app lets you broadcast anything via your iPhone camera.  Good or bad.  The iOS app makes you sign into twitter and allows you to follow.  You can choose to get notifications if any of the people you follow start a broadcast.

The Windows Phone variant (download here) is a lurker app only.  It's not bad though.  You can certainly enjoy the service by lurking at live video but you can't interact with the broadcaster.  I installed the iOS app on my iPad mini this morning and found that the interaction is key to this app.  It's really kind of cool.  iOS users can also "like" the video and if you happen upon a popular broadcast you will see hearts streaming up from the bottom right of the app.  The WP app doesn't have this yet.

Some casual observations.  How long will Twitter let this app live?  This is Twitter we are talking about.  Enjoy it while you can.  I applaud the developer however.  This dev put it together fast and it works.  Lastly, something makes me feel like Twitter and the internet just changed.  Big time.  Part of me is thinking like a live broadcaster.  This changes everything.  CES and shows like WWDC, MWC, Ignite, etc., will be bombarded by this service.  I'm also thinking of the darker side.  What happens when we see a major crime take place? Lives lost? Disasters?  This changes everything.

I think your observations and thoughts are right on point.  In about 1.5 hours total (not continuous, on and off) last night I witnessed the following:

The Cool:

- A Garden Wedding in Japan

.... Yup, that was all

The WTF:

- A large percentage of comments where the broadcaster was a girl/woman, was asking her for something sexual.

- A strangely high percentage of comments were asking to see the fridge (this must be an internet meme that I am out of touch with).

- People on the toilet

The Anticipated Problems:

- Several videos of people doing drugs

- Several videos of people streaming copyrighted content (movies, music)

- 2 different fights

- Pranks (sneaking up behind unsuspecting girls on the street and poking them)

- Nudity (specifically male, but we all know that this will go both ways and become more common)

I just don't see how this lasts.   Sure people have been recording this stuff and posting online for years, or live streaming on various websites for years, but for Twitter to put themselves in this kind of position really surprises me.  I think as you say, it is only a matter of time until various crimes (including murder, theft, sexual assualt, etc) are broadcast live, as well as porn, and what about terrorist streams (bombings, beheading, etc).  Everything about this feels bad, but maybe that is just me being an old man (at age 27).

I just got told I had "no life" and then a guy showed me his ass.

Amazing, I have seen apps removed from the Windows Store for much less offensive content haha

Okay, now I just saw a half naked fat kid on the toilet get scared half to death by his big brother. Was funny, but cruel.

-----------------------------------

I like it, the idea, but I think it will just become like Vine, something I only see in compilations on YouTube - let others curate the best content then watch that, rather than watching lots of boring stuff hoping for something good to happen.

Another issue I foresee is monetization, adverts and promotions seem like the only option, that will only derail what little good content there is already, unless done correctly.

-----------------------------------

Now I just saw a widowed man crying when asked questions about his deceased wife.

Such a strange beast this app is.

Reminds me of the first time I used YouTube. A complete mess, no quality, no control, there is something there, but it needs more curation and more professionals doing the videos.. But those guys have YouTube, so why would they even bother.

It is way too early to tell and to be honest, maybe this is the stepping stone that needs to exist before people become YouTube Broadcasters. Nowadays people won't even bother to try to do a YouTube channel without high tech camera and microphone equipment. Same goes for Twitch streamers.

They should add tipping/donating to the app and then take a cut. That would be the best monetization strategy in my opinion, plus people will actually have a reason to keep streaming on this app then.
