Don't Get Plex

Recommended Posts

Rod at home

I learned that Plex had an app for the Windows Phone 8. So I went ahead and got it, installed the server on my Windows 8.1 desktop, it went through the installation, and then....

I don't get it. What is supposed to happen next? I've identified the server, but now it's doing nothing. I've got Plex on my Roku 3, but it can't see my server. I'm not getting this at all. Why did I pay $4.99 for nothing?

and then?

Did you add media libraries?  Does the app see it?  I've never had an issue of not seeing the server and I've loaded Plex server on tons of stuff.

Add media libraries? I've no idea how, or even what. Or put differently, I expected it to explore my system and discover those for itself.

So if it is supposed to have media libraries added to it, which I presume are all on my PC, then how do I make it find those?

I use plex across Xbox one, roku 3, Win8.1 and WP and I think it is one of the best media playback/managers out there right now. I would definitely recommend it to people who have their own media libraries. I am eagerly awaiting the Xbox One app that should be released shortly.

Here is some info on adding media libraries to Plex.

Additionally, there are some recommendations on preparing your media for the matching process that plex uses.

Thank you, surfaceRT for your help. I went to the link on adding media libraries to Plex. It said that I was supposed to go to the Plex Web App. OK, let's start there; where is the Plex Web App? I go to https://plex.tv but that doesn't appear to be the "Plex Web App", as it doesn't have any idea at all about my having already downloaded and installed Plex on my PC. For example, if I go to https://plex.tv, and I clearly see my account there, log into it, etc. There's a link to "GO PREMIUM", which I've no intention at all of doing until I see some results from the free version. The other thing is "SERVERS", which I've clicked on and it complains that:

"You have no servers of your own published to Plex. Just sign into the Plex web app, and click publish in the preferences."

I am getting so frustrated with this thing!!! Where is this "Plex web app"??? When I downloaded Plex for my PC, why didn't it install that onto my PC. Better yet, why doesn't it tell me where to go to get this Plex web app??? I can't read minds, as this thing seems to demand that I do.

If you installed your Plex server on Windows -

  • Find the Plex icon in the Windows System Tray at the lower right of the screen. Right click the icon and choose Media Manager...
  • That should take you to http://127.0.0.1:32400/web/index.html
  • You can add your libraries from there.
