Dell Venue 11 Pro Vs. Surface Pro 3

Recommended Posts

Dave

I just picked up the Dell Venue 11 Pro and will be putting it up against the Surface Pro 3.  The Dell is a Core i5 variant and not the Atom chip.  Leave questions for me here  for the podcast.  Here is a photo of the two together.  It's an outdoor photo.  My new office is at the pool.

Will you be keeping the Dell and do you think it could 'replace' your laptop as well as a Surface Pro 3 could?

I don't have the Dell keyboard yet and it REALLY needs one the way I use these things.  I'm more of a laptop kind of user so I need to plop it down on something.  I can't hold the thing and use the screen keyboard.  Only when necessary.

I think it could replace a laptop though.  Just as the SP3 or SP2 easily can.  I'm really sold on this SP3 however.  The screen size, kickstand improvements, and the new trackpad solidify it as my go to device now.

I'm going to preface this comment with "I own a Surface Pro 2".

I got my Dell Venue Pro 11 i5 about two months ago as part of the seed program. I'm a senior network engineer and we are evaluating devices for our 5 year refresh. For years, I've been wanting a single device that could replace my laptop, desktop (with two external 1080p monitor or greater support), and function as a tablet. Last year I got the Latitude 10 as part of the program, but it just didn't have enough horsepower to fit my "one device to rule them all" goal. This device can be that one device for your average user. I have a desktop dock at home and one at work as well as a laptop dock. Its really good and while it can't play my Steam games at full res, it works decently (>30fps in Borderlands 2) at 1366x768. I had no problems with any of my work applications and as the Windows Store grows daily, i'm finding I'm using Modern style apps more and more. Of course, I'm writing this on it now (in tablet mode) while I'm out at the beach (I live in Boca Raton and have Fridays off in the summer.). To be honest, I like it better than my Surface Pro 2. The traditional Laptop styled Keyboard just works better than the Type cover. The Dell trackpad is OK, but like the Surface Pro 2's it is a little too small. To be honest, if I had a 13-15" version of this device, I'd never consider the Surface Pro 3. I rarely use the stylus except to sign docs. I would love to have the Surface Pro 3's stylus and OneNote capabilities, but I don't live in OneNote or draw, and the price difference between what an average user needs and the Surface Pro 3's cost means that large rollouts are probably better suited with the Dell Venue Pro 11. If Dell does make a larger version with the Haswell refresh later this summer, I'll recommend that we standardize on that, but this version is a better option for the price IMHO than the Surface Pro 2. I'll be going to a store today to check out the Surface Pro 3 for a comparison, but I suspect that other than the screen size and stylus, I would still favor the Dell.

My venue pro 11 has numerous issues.

While using, it will frequently change the screen brightness.

The touch quits working frequently and I have to hard reboot.

It won't connect to wireless on occasion and I have to hard reboot.

There is something I am missing but can't think of it right now. When I remember I will try to update the post.

I had the Dell Venue 11 Pro (7130 i3 version) and I purchased the SP2 about 2 months ago. They are not, in my honest opinion, in the same category of quality and performance. I had numerous problems with the Dell, which forced me to return. The system choked when I played "Asphalt Airborne 8". I found that odd because I didn't have such problems on the Dell Venue 11 Pro (5130) nor the Venue 8 Pro. In addition, I had performance issues when I used my VM software.

I would love to see your review and what your findings are/were.

Drewidian, do you have any follow up thoughts?  ITTOG, did it get better or worse?

I have not used it in the last couple months so not sure. A friend told me new firmware has made it a lot better. I need to test when I get back to the states in August and then sell it.

This Dell 11 is up for sale if anyone wants it.  The Core i5 tablet and a power keyboard.  That's easy $800 of stuff.  I'll go $400. PM me.
