Interestingly, Windows 9 might not include a “Desktop for running legacy Win32 apps,” according to “previous tips,” and will be updated “frequently and regularly” via the Windows Store.

If this is true then Windows 9 is the new version of RT, and we will see a desktop version alongside this.  They are not that stupid to think they are one year away from getting rid of the desktop in whole.  We will hear some about this over the next few days.

I'd guess this is their future direction, two separate OS using the same kernel.. or on a more simplistic level... Metro becomes more sophisticated and closer to the desktop.

Depending on your hardware one or the other becomes the default configuration .

Of course I would  expect a richer set of API's for metro which will bring deeper functionality to the live tiles.

 

Metro is not going away its simply evolving to a more functional state.
