Nokia Lumia 2520 - Review Followup

Recommended Posts

My review went live today. I'm starting this forum post for Q&A, followup and other discussion.  Please let me know if you have any questions about the device.

Pros

  • Amazing display that is well suited for multiple content types
  • Great speakers that truly set the device apart
  • LTE is built right in
  • Overal design

Cons

  • It could be lighter, but only since the iPad Air started shipping is weight a thing with larger tablets
  • The screen's backlight bleed can be annoying to some, apparently some of these devices have it better or worse than others
  • Windows RT - I believe the platform won't gain enough traction and a Bay Trail Atom running full x86 Windows would have helped this product succeed

I will continue testing the device and will update the forums with thoughts as I go along.

I have found issues with some game though. Some devs need to look into updating, like asphalt 8 had to. If you download despicable minions for example, half of the graphics won't render, and the rest that do are the resolution, causing them to stretch. Another game that won't work is My Country.

I didn't try Dispicable Me until late last night after I finished the review. I had the same poor experience. Halo and Asphault 8 seem to work well. I noticed besides games, even some apps like NBC News, Watch ABC and Plex don't quite work right. Watch ABC and Plex specifically won't play back any video content. CBS and PowerDVD (MKV via DLNA) work fine.

Other apps seem not quite aa fast as they can be. They aren't slow, they are just not as snappy as they could be. I worry everything will be optimized for the Tegra 3 & 4 in the Surface RT & 2 and not the Snapdragon 800 in the 2520. It is a shame because the Snapdragon 800 is an amazing performer.

How's your screen and speaker experience?

O, the screen is amazing. I have two of them in work trucks during the day, and my workers love them. They can see the screens clearly, and because our business is all done via online services now adays, they can show our customers their bills and don't need to go in the shade to view them on the 2520's screen.

I have no complaints about the speakers at all. I turn it down to 20 at night if I'm Netflix'ing in bed.

As for the games and apps, GameLoft ended up fixing asphalt 8 within 18 days of the 2520's release. Not bad turnaround, but that is the top selling app in the store, so priority may have played a part of that.

The screen really is something. My replacement unit screen seems even better! The brightness is amazing.

And yes, my speakers are rarely above 50, and usually in the 20s.

Still going strong with the Lumia 2520. I am looking forward to getting back in the office, simply to test it there. At work I will use solely the LTE connection, and apps like Mail, Calendar, One Note and Team View much more often.

At home, it is working out well with Hyper, Vevo, Tweetium, Facebook and Podscout. These Case Logic cases really help hide the weight of these devices. I can't quite explain, but both the Toshiba Encore 8 and the Nokia Lumia 2520 feel lighter and easier to work with in a Case Logic SureFit Folio.

At this point I see no need to go back to an 8" Windows 8.1 device, but I won't know for sure until I can test at work.

Tomorrow we will be making a few hundred invoices and schedules on our 2520s, and I have full confidence in their abilities.

I also can't wait for the keyboards to arrive. Unfortunately I am going to be traveling this weekend, and will have to hold my tablet while watching movies on the flight, so that may get old quickly.

LawnPaul, get a cheap stand if you can. Amazon has a bunch although you might not have time. Target and others places might have some, and I have even seen CD jewel cases turned into stands.

Works was super busy so I didn't get to use the tablet much, but my coworkers enjoyed checking it out.

I'm enjoying the 2520. Great screen, processor performance, 4g LTE. Now I'm waiting on the power keyboard. Miss the built in kick stand and full size USB of the Surface RT.

Just watched the awesome unboxing video at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iJebGdSdQM

I am still stuck between choosing this or an 8" Pro device.

Would really love to be swayed!

Okay so today Best Buy opened up pre-orders for the Nokia Lumia 920! I hopped in my car and drove down to ours and got my self one pre-ordered.

One thing though, if you pre-order at the store, it is only the matte black one. I was really wanting the cyan one but black will do. That was my second choice.

On the otherhand, if you pre-order online, you can choose which color. Weird, I know... Colors you can choose from are: Black, Red, Yellow, Cyan, White.

As of right now, AT&T has not started pre-orders. I called and verified that with them.

I am currently waiting on my new Lumia 920 to arrive in the mail from AT&T.

As exciting as that is, let me present my question.

I've had an HTC Evo 4g (PC36100) for the past two years, and one thing I've loved about it is the ability to hook it up to my tv via HDMI.

I know that the 920 has DLNA instead of HDMI, and I am actually considering buying a new tv for christmas.

Which brings me to the topic of my rant [slash] my question:
Why is it so hard to find a tv (or, preferably, a projector - I know, I'm weird) that is DLNA-certified?

Retailers and manufacturers just don't list "DLNA-certified" as a feature of their products! WHYYYYYYYYY?!

Is there some date that I'm not aware has passed, after which all tvs (and projectors?) are required to be DLNA-certified?

Please, help me find a new tv or projector that I can connect my 920 to, so I can get my NetFlix on.
