Last week I picked up the ModernMix app from Stardock, it is a tool that allows the “modern” windows apps to be displayed in a window on the desktop. It works very simply once it is installed, start any modern app and when you want to take it to the desktop, press F-10; you will switch to the desktop and the app will now be in a window. Hit F-10 again and back to full screen you go. There is also a “boxes” icon displayed in the upper right corner that you can use to switch modes or exit the app.

ModernMix also remembers the last mode that the app was in and the next time you launch it ModernMix will display the app in that mode. So if you want to always use the kindle app on the desktop you don’t need to do anything more than just start the app and it will be displayed on the desktop.

Some people might be wondering why you would want to use a modern app on the desktop, I’ll give you my reasoning. I still use the desktop a lot, with my software development tools, and it’s nice that I can have Evernote or a downloaded reference book on the Nook app on the desktop at the same time as my programming tools. It keeps me from having to constantly switching from the desktop to a full screen app to reference something. It also keeps me from having to install both the modern app and the desktop version of an app on the same machine to get the same usefulness of having the modern app on the desktop.

I’ve tested Email, Nook, Kindle, Evernote Touch, One Note, the Video app and a few others and all of them worked without any problems on the desktop. The only modern apps that I had any problem with on the desktop are games. Probably from the way that games write to the screen. The games didn't break; you just couldn't see everything on the game screen.

I’m so impressed with this app I think Microsoft should buy the app from Stardock and roll it into Windows 8.2. Not that I think they actually will. For $5 this app is a no-brainer if you spend any significant time working on the desktop.

the selection and quality of the windows 10 store apps   has taken a turn for the better in the last few months
Software publishers have started to load in their win32 apps  in the Store
The big one is  Itunes  of course.    I dont use Itunes per se but a program I use ( mediamonkey)  requires it to be installed to sync to Ipods and Iphones
The big advantage of loading in Itunes this way  is that it leaves behind all the other crud  ( apple updater, Bonjour etc) and just does Itunes
But there are several others that I have used and can recommend.  In some cases the author asks for a small fee for the program via the store.  but you can install on any  of devices hooked into your account and updates are handled thru the MS update process
Paint.net  a solid paint/photoshop type program.  Very good program that I have used for many years.    This is the program that should have replaced MS Paint, rather than the POS  Paint 3D
Libre Office   full featured office suite -  fork of the openoffice project  solid program  more like MS Office than the google office suite.  One of my daughters went to school using this and wrote her PHD thesis with it.
Irfranview  Lightweight handy image viewer/editor.     I have used this program for over 20 years !!!!     If I need to just crop or lighten an image to paste into another document,  this is what I use.
Inkscape   open source Vector drawing program -    similar to Adobe Illustrator  and visio     dont use this program often  but  since visio isnt part of the standard office 365 package,  a good program to have loaded up
Autodesk CAD Mobile    Dont confuse this for a full featured CAD program , but for viewing and marking DWG files or creating simple CAD profiles,  this free program works fine
Please feel free to pass along other useful items you found in the windows store

Have you guys seen that we have a new game called Temple Run: Brave.  It looks to be a Temple Run based on the theme of Disney's Brave movie.  I haven't downloaded it yet, but wanted to see if others had.  It is $1.49 in the store and currently is featured.

If anyone has a windows phone, I would suggest you check out the WP Outsiders app. It is a community app driven by windows phone users just like you and I.
It is a great app in my opinion and one that I check multiple times a day. If you have any questions about it, just hit me up.
You can find it here at the marketplace: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/outsider/16b4f331-e05b-e011-854c-00237de2db9e
