I found the Pandora app in the Windows Phone 8 store and downloaded it. It is ad-free for the rest of 2013 without a subscription.

I would be interested to see if/what the difference is difference in data usage between Pandora and Xbox music pass streaming. I think of Xbox music musical striving for higher audio quality, at the cost of higher data usage.

eitherway, if you stream music you risk the need for higher data plans

You are correct! I don't stream content on my data plan very often for that reason. The phone companies know a profit center when they see one. Streaming is the answer to the question of how they were going to recover all of the profits they lost from not charging for long-distance calls.

Mostly, I listen to the Xbox music service and Pandora when I am on wifi networks. In the car, I download music or podcasts before I leave and listen for free. (This is how I listen to nearly all of the Surfacegeeks podcasts. I know I miss out on the video from the YouTube broadcast, but this method gives me the time to listen to the shows.)
