Not Entirely Happy With My Sony Vaio Laptop

In December 2012 I was going to a conference, and I needed to get a new laptop, so I could access work in the event I was called upon to do so. Of course that was too early for me to get a Surface Pro, so I checked out various Windows 8 laptops, and settled upon a Sony Vaio SVE1414AE13L.It has a touch enabled screen. This was the first Windows 8 device I ever had interaction with. It has a i7 processor, 8 GB RAM and a 1 TB HD, so I thought it would  be great, but as I said this was my first inaction with a Windows 8 device and I was initially disappointed with the poor response to touch. For example, whenever I tried to close an app it took a lot of effort to close it. I had to press and hold the top of the window of a Metro app for a few seconds, before it would work. Since this was the first time I interacted with a Windows 8 device, I thought that was just the way that Windows 8 worked.

 

But last weekend my wife and I went to a Staples to check out their Windows RT, and WOW, what a difference! Windows 8 (Windows RT in this case) was truly fast and fluid. When we had any Metro app opened, if we swiped down from the top it immediately went down and closed. We close swipe windows from the left or top and it work really fast. The same isn't true of with my Sony Vaio. I confess I am disappointed with my Sony Vaio. However, I am a Windows developer, doing development with Visual Studio, SQL Server and other software products. I need a powerful machine, so although my Sony Vaio isn't what I hoped it would be, at least it gives me some experience with Windows 8. And more importantly I can do Windows 8 development with it.

 

I write this in hopes that it might help others considering the Sony Vaio as their Windows 8 machines. It isn't all that it should be, but it's OK. You won't have a great experience, but at least you can get some experience with Windows 8.

Have you tried calibrating the touchscreen on the Sony?

I put Windows 8 on a older HP Touchsmart and it took some timt to get it calibrated correctly.

As the Sony is new, it should be fine straight out of the box, but you can make adjustments.

For anyone else looking stay away from Sony and HP. They both are crap.

The more I think about it, I don't think calibrate will help the lag you are experiencing. Calibration helps if you are having trouble getting the right and top menus to appear.

Have you called customer support? There are settings in the registry that can help with screen lag. There is a post under the RT section on this site discussing lag for RT products. If you have not, I would encourage you to reach out to Sony as this is a new laptop.

Touch calibration is in; Control Panel, Hardware and Sound; Tablet PC Settings; Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input.

I currently own; 3 HP laptops, 3 HP Ultra small desktops(HTPC); 2 HP Workstations; 2 HP Servers; 1 HP Touchsmart;

Some were bought new, some used.

I have had zero failures and zero issues.

We did have a bad run of HP laptops at work, but they were all drive failures, Seagate.

Just my experience.

Yes, I have contacted Sony, but on a different issue. The Netflix app doesn't play in the Metro interface, and I've contacted them about that. (Netflix in the desktop mode works fine.) I'll have to do this again.

Well I had about 50 HP's requiring new MB's within the first 6 months of use. Couple that with their lack of focus or vision at the top and I will never buy their products again; at home or at work.

 

Sony has never been good. People just think they are good because they overcharge. Kind of like the apple affect.

      Panos Panay just wowed the Microsoft crowd with two incredible hardware reveals. The first was the SurfaceBook i7 with a whopping 16 hours of battery life.  The second was Surface Studio. I dare you to call it an "All in One" after today.

      The specs of Studio are impressive but visually it is stunning. It has 28" of wow that can be manipulated to however you prefer to create.

      It looks like a creative persons dream machine.  Apple picked a bad week to follow Microsoft when it comes to hardware reveals.  I personally would like to try the Studio and Dial with some video editing software.  I think it will be great for that.

      Surface Book
       
      The Surface Book is plain and simple; More.  More graphics and more battery.  It's a little heavier and starts at 3.6 pounds where last year's Surface Book was 3.3 pounds.  Maybe it's the new 6th Gen Intel Core i7 or the i7: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M with 2GB of GDDR5 memory.  That's nice but Panos stated they just put in more battery!  It's nice to see that.  Adds a little weight but for those that want the battery life it's a welcome change.
       

       
       
       
      Surface Dial
      The Dial is impressive.  It's compatible with any Windows 10 enabled PC, laptop, or tablet as long as it has the Anniversary Update.  Don't try this with your Surface Pro but it will stick to the screen of the Surface Studio!  It will have optimized off screen compatibility with Surface Book and SP4.
       
      It's a jog dial on steroids and Panos and software partners demo'd many uses of it. Color wheel, zoom in, etc.  It's $99 and can be purchased now for delivery on November 10th.

      5) Verizon access manger so I can use a USB wireless 4G modem - Who needs a SIM card!!- save yourself $130 price difference from an IPAD and subsidized prices of Android tablets. Its a PC baby!!!
