The surface has a nice 16:9 screen ideal for watching movies. I plan on using Hulu, Netflix, Xbox video, YouTube, etc for a lot of video on my surface. That being said, we'll also want to take some of our own content. Let's start discussing encoding the best video for the device.
(I'm working from DVDs in Video_ts format and unconverted Blu-ray rips.)
      Let's discuss the following:
Program: In the past, I have used Handbrake (www.handbrake.fr) and Windows Media Encoder once or twice. Other thoughts?
Resolution: The Surface RT resolution is 1366x768. Can it output higher res via the HDMI cable? Is this the res we should encode in?
File Format/Container: I was thinking MP4. Other thoughts?
Sound: Probably stereo for the most part.
      Other categories?

I'm not 100% sure about this so am posting on here to see if anyone else has had the same issue. There seem to be creaks being made when I try to press the buttons of the Surface keyboard that are near the corners. Also, there appears to be a bubble of air underneath part of the cover, near the mouse pad. The creaks make the cover uncomfortable to use.
Has anyone else experienced these? I'm going to try to get a replacement cover!

First of all, let it be know that I am very happy surface RT owner. I pre order it back in October, and besides some of the growing pains we went thru in the first couple of months I am very happy with my purchase.
On 11/15/13 at night, my surface RT died, and I mean DIED! It would turn on at all, not response what so ever. I called Support and after going through all the troubleshooting known to men he advised me to take the surface to a Microsoft store to test the power supply.
The next morning I called again and said that I would prefer to just send it out to get replaced because I could be wasting my time testing power supplies ( I am a flight attendant and I was leaving for London that evening). After a little talk I asked if they had a exchange program at the Microsoft stores, he said yes and proceeded to call the closest store to my address. We talk to the manager in a conference call and he said that he would be more than happy to help me.
I got to the store, and I kid you not, in 15 min I had a brand new Surface 1st gen in my hands. I was beyond impressed. I have had my surface for over an year ad they replaced it as if it was bought just days ago. It is nice to see Microsoft is standing by its product with great customer service.
That was the happy part of my story. Now the sad Part. After running some errands I go home at 2pm, promptly opening my new surface and starting set up. I was really disappointed that it still had windows 8 instead of 8.1. I don't know why I expected 8.1 but I did. I then notice that the battery was almost empty and I to plug it in. That would not have been much of an issue if there wasn't 57 updates waiting and they could start until the battery was way past 50%.
I plugged the surface to the wall and started to wait, frustrated beyond belief. I waited, and waited and finally the updates started. Then I waited and waited and the update finished. I quickly went to the store and started to look for he 8.1 update and nothing. Went back to the Microsoft update settings and lo and behold another 27 updates waiting. I waited and waited some more, and then I was I able to finally finish all windows updates.
Well, I could keep writing about it but I'm getting bored. The point is, it took me from power on to actually being able to use the device almost 5hrs!!!! As a consumption/ creation portable device that unacceptable. The average user is not willing to wait 5 hours to use their new toy. Microsoft should really find a way to make the end user experience a little easier.
P.s.: After all that, when I finally was able to add my memory card back in the surface, the slot was malfunctioning and wouldn't read my card unless I held it there with my finger ( I taped it) so I will have to go thru that again in a couple of day.....

You'd have thought I'd have learned by now - having already been bitten by the 'oh, you've got a WP7 device - no, you can't have WP8' debacle.
And whilst I understood the rationale behind this decision at the time, it still made me feel very unimportant to Microsoft (I'd only moved over to Windows Phone a few months prior to the big announcement for WP8).
And now it seems like history is about to repeat itself, more or less. OK, the devices in question are a bit older now, but I don't get Microsoft's decision this time around.
Why offer Surface RT / 2 owners an update which will have 'some of the functionality' of Windows 10 only?
It feels like Microsoft are completely embarrassed by the whole Win RT issue. Whilst it didn't turn out all that well for them, the Surface RT / 2 remain, in my opinion, 2 of the best tablets out there. So we can't install desktop applications - big deal - the Surface RT, with the inbuilt Office Applications, does everything I need it to and more besides.
If Microsoft really want to kill Win RT once and for all, give RT device owners the ability to upgrade to Windows 10 fully - with or without desktop functionality. I would be more than happy to upgrade to the 'mobile' version of Windows 10 - the desktop in RT is basically unnecessary anyhow - as long as there are Office Apps, I couldn't care less whether I need to go to the desktop or not to open them.
Someone has already started a vote for Windows 10 on Surface RT / 2 on the Microsoft User voice site - shortened link below - please click and add your support.

Some are getting emails stating that their Surface RT tablets have already shipped. WPCentral wrote an article on this today. Although, I have received mine and my account still shows it as "in process". Anyone else get an email?
