Ok, update...

Seems to be an issue with the P20 firmware.

I reverted to the HP version 15.10.09.00 and all is good.

Any idea which version is ok to use off the Broadcom website?

edit: just read your post on another forum and it looks like I need P18. I'll drop you a PM 🙂

I flashed H220_IT firmware.

I'll have a look for the P18 firmware 🙂

I don't understand this bit?

P18 IT firmware by default isnt bootable and only presents 4 drives
just change it to 8 and enable boot both in the LSI bios

I just change settings in the config? (CTRL C on boot)

I don't need more than 4 drives at present but I will do at some point.

This link is one I reference for the NMI issue with LSI on MS Gen8. If this is all still valid, P20 firmware is OK, but the BIOS bundled with it is not. You need to back rev the BIOS:

Hmm.. programmed P18 and I have drives missing again. Seems if I use anything other than the H220_IT firmware then I have missing drives 😞

Yeah, I figured all that bit - NMI issue!

So I stick with 7.39.00.00 BIOS.

Still have the problem with any other firmware that I have tried (P20/P18) results in missing drives.

I was getting some CRC errors in Unraid so was kinda hoping that the firmware upgrade may fix them.

However in the process of messing with P18, I realised that there is a x64sas2.rom which I have never programmed. Also I had never cleared the SBR from when it was an IR firmware.

Will see how it goes now with H220_IT fw, empty SBR and the 2 BIOS roms programmed.

These drives are all HGST 4TB drives - they are nearly 7 years old now, but have only ever been used to store media, so although they have been powered on for 7 years 24/7 they haven't exactly been thrashed.

However.. they were in my Windows system, and they were in a Drivepool array monitored by Stablebit Scanner. None had showed any issues. This was on the B120i however.

I've pulled the drive that was causing CRC errors, (the CRC count was still increasing after the BIOS flash) and replaced it with one of the other 4TB drives.

I also added a brand new WD 8TB Red which has been flawless so far.

No idea why P18 or P20 shows missing drives. There could be a possibility that the LSI controller card is faulty of course.

Well I strongly suspect a faulty controller card.

Any drive in bay 4 gives crc errors. Also, any drive in bay 4 can sometimes show up or boot or be missing on boot.

Plugged the SAS cable back into the B120i and everything is hunky dory.

my first LSI 9217 4i4E was sold as the External port not working

which it didnt detect any drives at all when i got it

i took apart the casing on the SFF-8088 on the pcb (e.g. removed the metal shell)

you cant do that with the SFF-8087 on the pcb

dipped only the External port in pure isopropanol making sure not to go

anywhere near the actual lsi chip (didnt want to remove any of the heatsink paste)

left it for an hour or so soaking

then left it to evaporate for another few hours

its been fine since then (i use the external port)

maybe the contacts are slightly bad on yours and p15 just ignores the problem

with newer firmwares actually ignoring the drive because of it

i would try dipping the internal header on the 9217 if i where you

I got shipped a replacement, and that's fine so definitely was an issue with the card.
