Bought a new HPE Gen8 – Now I want SAS...

Umm thats a HP H222 not P222

aka LSI 9207-4i4e with a HP sticker on it

Hmmm, not what it says on the box, unless the seller has the wrong box, its in my home town and im collecting it when he's back from holiday, if its not what it says on the box, refund will be requested.

the part number does match other images and HP spec sheets though.

further searching shows both under that part number, either way its the same without a cache and im happy at the price.

the sticker is wrong it has the correct part number 650926-b21

but the wrong name p222 instead of h222

as i said its just an LSI 9207 4i4e with a hp sticker

and its locked to the LSI P15 firmware

well not locked but you have to really know what you doing to update it past p15

why would you pay £50 for it with p15 firmware

when you can get the same card with p18 firmware for £30

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Broadcom-LSI-SAS-9207-4i4e-8-port-6Gb-s-SATA-SAS-pci-e-3-0-Low-Profile-/122385565248?hash=item1c7ebf8640:g:f7YAAOSwnHZYSY~S

also alot of h222's are early revision chipsets and are actually LSI 9205 4i4e's (pcie 2.0 instead of pcie 3.0)

hence why hp stuck with p15 firmware to not brick the early ones

anwyay if you end up getting it anyway and want help updating it i know more than most about them

but i would get the one i linked if i where you

Because clearly my knowledge is less than yours !

presuming that was the answer you were looking for mate. when the seller lists it as a P222 and the box says P222 ive not looked further in to it, nor the limitations of the firmware. now you have schooled me, i'll be asking for a refund, saving 20 quid and updating to P18 firmware.

anyway, its beer o'clock, enjoy the weekend.

i was simply saying if you where going to get it anyway as its local to you

there is a lockout preventing you from updating past p15

and if you wanted to know how to check the chipset revision

and then if its actually a 2308_d1 (9207 and not 9205)

i could give you the files to update it past p15

there is no shame in not knowing every last thing about a device/whatever

I have spent hundreds of hours hacking the lsi 2308 so know alot about it

im sure you know more than me on some matters

geez mate calm down

you try and help people and they bite your head off

Mine came today and Like the HP LSI 9217-4i4e

the sas address's are listed in reverse so if you flash the LSI P20 firmware your drives will be listed backwards

I have 9207-4i4e P18 IT Firmware (dumped from this card)

and 9217-4i4e P18 IR Firmware (dumped from HP LSI 9217-4i4ie)

give me a few days to mess with the sbr and see if i can come up with a working p20 with the ports in the correct order

if you get impatient i can do you a P18 Raid firmware that will list the drives in the right order

here's details of the problem (not really a huge problem most people wouldnt even notice it)

https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/hp-9217-4i4e-ports-swapped-around.12191/

Awesome thank you! Will flash it right away when I receive it! :)

Will be using it with ESXI, can I just use MegaRAID Storage Manager with it or is there also a bios where I can setup RAID?

Here's the P18 IR + IT firmware for anyone who picked one up and wants raid

It turns out they came from intel 1u socket 2011 servers

I have asked him the exact model with a bit of luck i will be able to sniff down some P20 firmware at some point

This firmware is for oem LSI 9207-4i4e / oem LSI 9217-4i4e
if you use the firmware provided at Avango's website the ports are reversed

Backup your device before continuing and save it somewhere safe (bk*.bin files)
backup.bat

if your device came with any firmware different to P18 plz provide me with your backup
for others to use

The IR firmware came from a HP LSI 9217-4i4e and is P18
The IT firmware came from a Intel LSI 9207-4i4e and is P18
They are both made directly by LSI and sold complete to them
but for some stupid reason LSI have messed with it slightly and reversed the port layout somewhow (most prob via the sbr)
which means the ports are in reverse if you use the firmware provided by lsi/avango/broadcom

If you havnt got a problem with the ports being in reverse feel free to use LSI P20
If like me you have got a problem with it (or want to be able to roll back in the future)

here's the required files

P18 IT firmware by default isnt bootable and only presents 4 drives
just change it to 8 and enable boot both in the LSI bios

P18 IR firmware by default is bootable and presents 8 drives

HP Gen8 Servers get an nmi error on initialization of the MPTSAS2 7.39.02.00 (a bsod basically)
7.39.00.00 is fine so thats the build i use (HP also use 7.39.00.00)

IT Firmware 18.00.00.00
IR Firmware 18.00.00.00
Legacy Bios 7.39.00.00
UFI BSD 7.27.01.01

If you want to keep the factory Board Assembly & Board Tracer Number
sas2flsh -list
write down the details and flash like below
sas2flsh -o -assem xxxxxxx
sas2flsh -o -tracer xxxxxxx

ir.bat for 9217-4i4e IR firmware
it.bat for 9207-4i4e IT firmware

The IR P18 Firmware is downloadable from HP
The IT P18 Firmware isnt available anywhere i had to dump it from the Intel LSI 9207-4i4e

I will keep working on a P20 firmware with the ports not in reverse

LSI drivers by default dont add the required registry key's to tell windows to spin idle drives down
to enable spindown run the registry key included after every new driver install

e.g. if you update the drivers or flash it to a 9217-4i4e from 9207-4i4e

Great thank you, mine came in the mail yesterday!

So I have to use the P18 firmware and not the P20 you listed before?

Is there any difference in what file to run to flash it?

Thanks! :)

You can run the p20 firmware but the ports will be reversed

run backup.bat first (dos)

to flash the p18 firmware

you just run ir.bat from a dos boot disk

check if your card is on p18 or higher

if higher would apreciate your backup's
