Hi All,

I'm a newbie and have a Gen8 with default settings and hardware

I want to install 2012R2 on a SSD from the ODD port.

How do i configure the SSD in bios so it boots first?

How do i configure it as a logical drive to install windows

What is AHCI and why do i need it?

Then i want to mirror my 2x3TB as a RAID1

if i use Intelligent Provisioning how do attach the iso for windows and once complete when and how do the HP hardware drivers  get installed?

Sorry for so many questions, only had the box for 1.5 weeks, i will master this gen8 eventually.

There are three modes for the storage on the Gen8 MicroServer legacy IDE or AHCI or B120i. AHCI presents each drive to the OS and supports advance drive formats. The B120i is firmware based RAID that is compatible with HP Smart Array controllers. Unfortunately on the Gen8 MS booting from the ODD port is not supported in AHCI mode. There is a thread posted by Biggerman on creating a bootloader to boot from the SSD in AHCI mode. In B120i mode you can boot from the ODD port, but you need to configure the SSD as a single drive RAID0. From what you have asked above, you could run the B120i and set the SSD up as a single drive RAID0 and set the two 3TB drives as a RAID1. You configure the B120i in the SSA Software during boot. If you want to do software RAID1 you could setup all the drives as single drive RAID0 and create the mirror in your Windows. AHCI is the best choice for software RAID, but you would need to use a bootloader to boot from the ODD port.

I have the SSD in the ODD SATA port. I have all disks including the SSD set as raid0, each disk separately. I have use the HP installation wizard(forgot the real name) to install SServer 2012 R2 with no trouble. It also installs all drivers.

I am running Hyper-V with 2 machines. Or I have to say I was, my SSD just died yesterday :) I don't remember I had trouble to set the BIOS to boot from the ODD at all.
