Would a low profile PCIe SATA card work to add more SSDs?

Hi,

In my Gen 8 i already have 4 x 6TB WD reds and 1 x SSD for read cache. Running Xpenology.

I want to add another SSD or possibly a couple could I put a low profile PCIe SATA card in and use that for the additional SSDs? I know it wouldn't be as good as a proper RAID card or whatever but surely it would be as good as the ODD SATA port that I'm using for my read cache SSD at the moment.

Something like this, for example: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PCIe-PCI-Express-to-SATA3-0-2-Port-SATA-III-Expansion-Controller-Card-Adapter-6G-/282067724466?hash=item41ac8be8b2:g:2moAAOSwnNBXXktx

The only other question is power, would I split off one of the molex power connectors to present SATA power connectors for the SSDs? As the current SSD just uses the ODD power, or could I split that?

Thanks

I don't see why it wouldn't work. Considering the price of that controller you wouldn't lose much even if it doesn't :) You can split either it doesn't matter. Whatever splitter is easier to find for you. SSD drives consume only about 2W compared to about 15W+ for regular disk, so you can attach them all to single power rail

Oh right didn't realise there was a difference. So it's 200w?

Could you recommend a sata card that would work and not cause the fan speed to go up for me please or would something like my suggestion work?

Thanks

marvell 9230 is good for low power under 1w tdp

4 x 6gbps pcie 2.0 x 2

lsi 9207-4i4e is quite nice but it's 9w tdp

8 x 6gbps pcie 3.0 x 8

and adds a few % to the fan in the long run

it is a nice card though

yes eu psu's are 200w
