I have finally decided to use my LSI 9217-4i4e that i have been sitting on for the last year or so

and picked up a TowerRaid TR4X+ on ebay earlier (£62 +£10 postage price ok?)

I can get a 2m Amphenol SFF-8088 to SFF-8088 Cable for £6.99

or a 0.6m Dell SFF-8088 to SFF-8088 Cable for £11

The 0.6m whilst it is just long enough will give me no room to move stuff around

Having no experience with sas im a bit worried 2m is pushing it with sata drives

all the drives are 6gbps sata btw.

any advice?

here's the enclosure btw..

Taken from wikipedia:

  • Because of its higher signaling voltages, SAS can use cables up to 10 m (33 ft) long, whereas SATA has a cable-length limit of 1 m (3.3 ft) or 2 m (6.6 ft) for eSATA.[6]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_Attached_SCSI

What's not clear is that if running SATA over SAS would adhere to the same specifications.

I suspect its a case of

If using an expander i can use a long run upto the expander

but as im just using an enclosure the sata signaling is traveling all the way along the SFF-8088

so i went with the 0.6M SFF-8088 to play it safe
