Hi guys, I recently got the Hp Microserver gen 8 running ESXi 6 hosting ubuntu server and windows server. So left the N54L around. I intend to make it a iSCSI target for the ESXi host on Gen 8.

Which OS would you guys recommend on N54L that only serve iSCSI? It have 16GB ram a WD black 2.5" OS drive and 4x 3TB WD Red drive (likely go for raid 5)?

I have basic knowledge on Ubuntu server, FreeNAS and Solaris. Looking for something lightweight and powerful enough to run it, so likely go for non gui OS only

I have played with FreeNAS for an iSCSI target. Section 10.5:

I was going to tell you to look at RockStor as well, but I do not think they have their iSCSI target worked out yet:

You could also direct attach the drives in the N54L to your Gen8
