Yep, change is difficult for everyone, but in part that is why we love tech since it changes all the time.  Mostly painful but always fun.

I am now on Untangle 14 HomePro ($50/yr).

For those who have extensive experience on either platforms, what do I gain and/or lose if I move to Sophos XG Home Edition when my HomePro subscription runs out?

I’ve used both Sophos UTM 9 and XG. Why would you want to leave Untangle NGFW 14? Have found it to be a welcome change over Sophos.

I think the answer depends on many factors.  I have tried/used every version of Untangle and think it is a great program.  The pricing is great and blows away anything you can buy in the store.  That said, if you do not mind a learning curve, you will gain extra power and configuration options, especially in filtering.  Just my two cents.

Not that I hate it. On the contrary, I was kicking myself for not moving to it from pfSense sooner. But then again, I'm also looking for value. If Sophos can do almost, if not, everything Untangle can do, I might decide to jump ship and save $50 per year.

I would not do it for cost saving only as it will likely require some time investment.  Do for added security and options.  XG is getting better and better and I convinced I would not use anything else but I have spent quite a bit of time learning it.

If you have not seen it and you want to blow an hour, I did a video on filtering that got allot of traction.

I have settled in on xg now - 4th time's a charm.

by sheer repetition I'm pretty comfortable with how to set it up. One aspect of using business software as a "home" user - the value judgements in many of the categories etc. differ from the way a home admin might view them. For example, a business would frown upon its employees looking into how to unionize but at home who cares. Job surfing, porn, etc. all take on different judgments at home versus business. I also found little use for app filtering. I chose to block only the most severe proxy apps.

I am enjoying being able to drill down on the reports!
