Hi all

I've just purchased a HP ProLiant ML10 v2 I3-4150 server and 32GB RAM to install inside

Looking to run ESXi 6.X from USB and then use my synology NAS DS416 with Iscsi

What is the best CPU for this server and how good is the CPU i've ordered ?

Thanks

Your mileage may vary, but 32GB and i3-4150 should be OK. A XEON cpu would give you VT-d, which can be useful with ESXi if you need to directpath PCI devices.

The ML10v2 shipped with choices of two XEON:

Intel® Xeon® E3-1220v3 (3.1GHz/4-core/8MB/80W)

Intel® Xeon® E3-1241v3 (3.5GHz/4-core/8MB/80W, HT)

I think you could use any of the Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1200 v3 Product Family

http://ark.intel.com/products/series/75143/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1200-v3-Product-Family#@All

I don't think I would invest in a XEON until you determine that you need it. Everything you listed above should work fine on the i3 with 32GB.

I picked one of these up on the newegg shellshocker.

I'm actually looking at swapping the CPU and upping the memory.

Was going to move my plex server to it and stick 4 8tb drives in it and get rid of my other 2 boxes that do next to nothing. The i3 has a 4000ish passmark but it might struggle with plex

Anyone seen these Intel NUC 6th gen devices

Intel BOXNUC6i7KYK3 i7-6770HQ NUC Kit - Metallic

Link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01FWIUZ7W

Its a quad core i7 and will run ESXi 6.0, just wondering how much better performance i'll get with this and 32GB installed

I've been playing around with the ML server today and got about 5 VM guests running and its holding up ok
