WHS, ESXi or baremetal install?

I am about to move my Whs2011 install from a N54l to a newly acquired Gen8 with an i5 cpu.

Now im unsure which way to go:

1. installing WHS baremetal on the ssd and hdds or

2. Using ESXi and running whs as a vm.

So I have some questions about ESXi vs. normal install:

Will features like USB, iLO monitoring, sleeping hdds still work if virtualize?

How about performance loss?

I don't really need advanced virtualisation as I'm just running a xpenology instance in virtbox, but I might want to play with ESXi.

I did some extended reading but I am thankful for any advice.
