Asus wireless routers have been a longtime favorite of mine for many years for home use and now my all time favorite router/UTM software Untangle can be flashed on the Asus RT-AC88U, The Asus router is not cheap @292.97 from Amazon but if you don't have a spare system laying around with multiple NIC's or you don't want to build a system this is a great option.

I just want to add that this will not be a solution you can send to grandma and have her manage it, If your anal about network security and your willing to manage it for friends and family this is a hard solution to beat at this price point of 5.00 a month 50.00 a year for all you can eat for enterprise protection.

Now this is interesting.  As much as I am no longer a huge Untangle fan, it is miles apart from regular routers.  This is well worth checking out.  Thanks for the lead.

Could it work on this one? Asus RT-AC68U or only the one you linked to?

Nice, I have a slightly different model (integrated ADSL) I hope it comes out for that model. But having said that it could be a good "box drop" thing for me to drop in at several other locations

I'm no longer using my RT-AC68U. Would be awesome to be able to use it for this.

I want to make it very clear that even though we can now install Untangle on this Asus RT-AC88U we can't install all the packages they offer such as the paid version on AV do to limited storage/RAM so before anyone decides to go this route make sure your OK with a crippled version of Untangle. This came to light yesterday when I was looking at the FAQs and decided to call them to see what we could run under this configuration, This info was not available at the time of my original post here and even though I had called Untangle sales prior to posting this sales said there was no difference but as can clearly see that's not the case https://wiki.untangle.com/index.php/ASUS_RT-AC88U_FAQ

How is running Untangle on a home router different than a full server?

They are very similar and actually run on the same software and technology. However, the firmware is built for the home user so it has a different look and feel. It also has different defaults and a different set of applications available.

It's the same, but different.
