Some of the education purchase programs are for use in education, some are for home use.

You would need to confirm the use case for the purchase program you are using.

Do you know the name of the Microsoft purchase program you would be using?

Depends on the wording of the licensing.

IIRC, you have to be actively enrolled/employed to continue to use it. But I'm not entirely sure about that.

There really isn't.

Visual Studio Professional with MSDN  is one option. It's a yearly subscription, rather expensive.  Renewal is cheaper though.
It's $1199, and $800/year for renewal.

Aside from that, there is BizSpark, IIRC. It's meant for businesses, though.

MSDN is fine if the OP is looking for test and development. MSDN is not for production use, business or personal.

Yup.

And BizSpark is only for startups, and if you're not a consultant.  And it's only valid for 3 years.

Software Assurance is much longer term, is full licenses, but it's VERY expensive for home use (much more so than MSDN, IIRC).

Basically, there isn't a good option for home use.

What are you intending to use the OS for Simon?? One of the cheapest ways to buy a WSS 2012 Essentials license is to buy one of the NAS boxes that come with it pre-installed (I'm not sure who other than Thecus offers such units, but a quick Google search ought to enlighten). They are not the most powerful boxes in the world (although the newer Thecus box looks a little better in that respect than the original trio) but they might suit your use case and will cost you less for the whole package than buying a standalone license.

I do not know if it applies overseas, although I believe it does. If you are a registered business (here in Aus, means having an ABN) then you can get what is called MAPS or Microsoft Action Pack Subscription. I paid 390AUD this year for my renewal and I get a bunch of stuff

Windows 10 Pro for example is 10 licences, 10 licences of office as well there are other restrictions on it such as you are not meant to use server 2012 and 2012R2 at once and so on and so forth but I have not had an issue with them on that yet. Also those licences are built up over a number of years, for example the 2008 licences stopped being handed out in 2013 or 2014 as they expect you to use the latest and greatest, but as I cannot see what is current and what is from my previous years I cannot give you a current list

Thats what i have been wondering too..My educational institution offers discounts for students not educators so I am out. By the way, i came across a bunch of sellers on ebay selling server 2012 r2 essential licenses. Some are in the $100 or less range. Cant get a feel if they are genuine or not. Most claim that they sell you a code and no DVD etc. I am playing with the evaluation version and when i am done, probably just need to activate with a genuine license so that would work if it is genuine.
