Windows 7 to Windows 10 Microsoft forced upgrade

So I almost had my only Windows machine update to W10 on me.  I turned off auto update and deleted a previous update which pushed this on me and now I feel I'm sitting here vulnerable because I don't have auto update on.  I can't take the chance however as this OS is running my home automation software which doesn't run on W10.  Now that the upgrade is no longer free is MS stopping their nonsense of pushing this update on everyone?  Is it safe to turn on auto updates again without worrying MS will try and tell me what OS I want?

on the windows weekly podcast last week, they mentioned that the update notification might hang around for a while

so I am keeping my "never 10" patch current on my remaining W8.1 machine for a while

doesnt seem to hurt anything
