Luma - DHCP issues w/Tivo

New Luma owner here. Have to say that I am not that impressed with the Luma system as a whole. I like the WiFi signal, but frankly that is only a part of a home network. I am really disappointed in the lack of visibility to the system. I get that it might gear more toward "Plug and Forget" type people, but you still have to have some visibility to troubleshoot problems.

 

So... here is mine...

 

Setup the new Luma 3-Pack last night throughout my house. The main Luma is connected to the cable modem on the in port and the out port is connected to an 8 port 10/100/1000 switch (#1). It seems like the other wired devices on the switch are working fine. I have another hub/switch (#2) connected to #1. I have a Tivo box that I plugged into #2 and it does not seem to pick up a DHCP address.

 

For troubleshooting purposes I moved the Tivo connection to #1 and still no DHCP. I reset the master Luma (pulled the power) and it eventually came back online and did offer a DHCP address to the Tivo. I thought that was the trick and so I reconnected Tivo back to #2 and no DHCP. So... I connected back to #1 and still no DHCP. I ran out of time to try the whole reset Luma thing again, but I was wondering if anyone else has seen issues with DHCP and wired devices? It seems like once it sends them out, it does not try again. 

 

It is also very disappointing that there is no visibility to any of the configuration aspects of the Luma settings. Like how long the lease time is, etc.

 

I guess I might have to spend the weekend using wireshark to see if I can see what is going on, just wondering if anyone else has worked through any DHCP issues with them.

I have to say after owning Luma for almost 3 weeks I share your thoughts as a whole. The interview had the Co-founder Paul Judge back on June 2nd gave me the indication that many of theses features would be included on release but as we know they are just vaporware at this point, There is good news though Luma has a soft promise date of July 26 2016 to give us some of these much needed added features so we shall see.

Your network hookup is very confusing to me, Could you please illustrate in a different way how everything is hooked up? As for very advanced settings your talking about your not going to find it on Luma/Eero because these products are not designed for power users or network engineers, They are designed to be plug and play with some advanced networking so we can do port forwarding and such but that's it.

Sure, it is a bit confusing to me too! So here is my best attempt to draw it out...

 

 

Internet ---------- Luma1 --------- Switch1 --------- Switch2 ------- Tivo  

(This is the config that didn't work the first time around.)

 

Internet ---------- Luma1 --------- Switch1 --------- Tivo

(This is the config that I did get a DHCP address after resetting Luma1.)

 

Internet ---------- Luma1 --------- Switch1 --------- Switch2 ------- Tivo  

(I figured it was working now so I put Tivo back to Switch2, but no DHCP when it reconnected.)

 

Internet ---------- Luma1 --------- Switch1 ---------  Tivo  

(Tried putting it back to Switch1, but still no DHCP. Did not have time to try and reset Luma again to test.)

 

 

 

The errors I get on Tivo are that it does not get a response from the DHCP server. I will try and confirm that when I have more time to play with things and I can use a link runner or wireshark to see what is going across the wire. Just seems like all of my non-computer devices (Tivo, BluRay, weather station, etc.) that are on Switch2 are not getting full connectivity although some did get IP Addresses at some point. 

 

I just switched out a Buffalo WiFi router and put the Luma in its place, so I may still have some disconnected devices with static addresses on Switch2 but both Tivo and the BluRay are DHCP so they should be getting their config from Luma1.

 

I really don't like the zero visibility to what is happening on the Luma device, like assigned IP Addresses, etc. not be logged or visible on the Luma side. Hopefully these features will show up soon. 

 

I really need the parental controls so I bought the Circle device from Best Buy for a great price ($79) but I am waiting until the network is stable before I add that to the mix.

Here is an update from Luma about the same question... Maybe it is the Luma firmware after all...

 

We have an application update coming by the end of the month which will allow you to set Proxy Servers, Static Ip, Port Forwarding and resolve some compatibility bugs involving more unique types of connected devices, such as TIVO devices. It is supposed to be available in just a week or so. This will be the update you need to set advanced configuration options so that you will be able to find a consistent performance for your unique setup in regards to your TIVO.

Here is an update from Luma about the same question... Maybe it is the Luma firmware after all...

 

We have an application update coming by the end of the month which will allow you to set Proxy Servers, Static Ip, Port Forwarding and resolve some compatibility bugs involving more unique types of connected devices, such as TIVO devices. It is supposed to be available in just a week or so. This will be the update you need to set advanced configuration options so that you will be able to find a consistent performance for your unique setup in regards to your TIVO.

Thanks for the update. I guess it could be a firmware problem though it sounds very odd that with one switch TIVO works fine but as soon as you connect two switch it no longer works. You say you got a 3 pack of Luma are you only using one in your testing?

 

What is the make/model of the switches?

Do the switches have a dedicated up-link port or any port can be used for daisy chaining switches?

Nothing fancy on the switches. They are cheapo entry level devices with no management or uplink ports.

 

I did some more troubleshooting and it seems like Luma does not like any of my embedded devices like Tivo, Phillips Hue, Sony BluRay, Weather Station, etc. I spent an hour or so with the Luma support people with ZERO progress. I could connect a laptop to SWITCH2 and get an IP address and get to the internet, but none of my embedded devices would work. I was fed up and ended up getting out my old Buffalo WiFi router, turned of WiFi and connected the WAN port to SWITCH1 and connected SWITCH2 to a LAN port on the Buffalo. Now Tivo is getting an IP address from the Buffalo and out to the internet through the WAN port through the main Luma device. My other "smart" devices are able to function again if they are connected though the Buffalo router first.

 

Connectivity layout:

LUMA1 ------ SWITCH1 ------ WANonBuffalo ------- LANonBuffalo ------- SWITCH2 -------- TIVO  (This is working)

 

Seems like they have a problem dealing with non-computer devices. I am hoping that the update will actually fix that and I can pull the Buffalo out of the picture. So disappointing that they have messed up what is basic functionality in most routers these days.

Hmm,,, perhaps Luma should have done some beta testing with tech enthusiast that have a variety of devices. Like the people in this forum. Like several of us offered to do for them,,,,,,,,,

I was thinking the same thing when I saw a Tivo described as a unique device.

Interesting, I guess there is more then one way to drive home -_- Tomorrow was Luma soft date for the first update, Lets hope it lands and fixes your trouble and gives us the features promised.

Quick update on Luma's update...

 

I was finally able to reconnect my Tivo and weather station device back to the Luma network this weekend. I was pleasantly surprised that the both device are working now after the update to the Luma firmware. Glad to see that they are getting things to work finally!

 

Now... how about those promised features!
