I did check the Motherboard and no evidence of any capacitor issues...

I went with a Corsair unit 500W

Glad to here the motherboard looks good and good choice with the PSU. Yes please keep us informed how it goes.

I don't know if I should start a separate thread but here is where I am at.

I am thinking about replacing this box in its entirety as I don't want to throw bad parts into a new box.

My question is - off-the-shelf (just a dell/Lenovo) box from Best Buy or build my own...

I have built before just don't know if the costs savings (if there is any) would be worth it.

This box is my plex server and thats about it.

Build versus Buy, set a price point and see what you can get.

If you need a specific form factor build it.

I have had great luck with refurbs. Woot has this for $149:

HP Elite 8200 Small Form Factor Desktop, Intel Core i3-2100 Dual-Core 3.1GHz, SATA Hard Drive, 4GB DDR3 RAM, Win7Pro 64-Bit

http://computers.woot.com/offers/hp-elite-8200-intel-core-i3-sff-desktops?ref=cp_cnt_wp_13_3

I have one of these so I can confirm that audio works over the display port connection with a DP to HDMI adapter.

Do you have any local stores that sell used PC's? Many of these stores have PC's removed from businesses, but still very functional and in great shape.

If you want to keep it small HP-Dell-Lenovo make ultra small boxes as well:

HP 8200 Elite USFF/USDT Core i5-2400 QuadCore/2.5Ghz 4Gb/250Gb/DVD Windows 7 Pro

For $150

Just some thoughts.

Thanks SD -

I just want to make sure that I get something comprable to my i5-2500k which is difficult in the refurb market.

I have been looking around.

I would like to stay under 500 for the box. I could buy a new dell for around that.

Am I to take it the new PSU did not solve your problem?

Do you want to stay with a LGA 1155 Socket and try and reuse your CPU?

If so I would recommend a Mini ITX motherboard pick from here https://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=mini+itx+motherboard+1155&tag=googhydr-20&index=electronics&hvadid=42274087067&hvpos=1o1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12686946154534484570&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_6eg4hzi080_e

And a small form factor case like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129185

I am a big fan of Gigabyte mother boards.

Was actually looking at getting a bigger case which I guess would necessitate an ATX motherboard.

I want something I can get my hands into.

I plan on sticking at least a DVD drive / sSd and 1-2 HDDs

If this is going to be an HTPC I would install a Blu-Ray reader in it. You would need to purchase software that would allow Blu-Rays to play such as the very popular PowerDVD software, It works very well for both DVD & Blu-Ray playback. http://www.cyberlink.com/stat/edms/ppc/blu-ray-player-software/powerdvd/16/15P_Win10-15-50P/us/index.jsp?affid=2581_-1_80&gclid=CjwKEAjww_a8BRDB-O-OqZb_vRASJAA9yrc53Wf9xKnsG3M0jUSghm1r4AcfNVz0TehR6lf7yLfPyxoC28_w_wcB

Are you looking for a case that resembles a piece of AV equipment that you can stick into your entertainment center or is this box going to be out of site?

There are few manufactures of cases that I use below in no particular order, You would be hard pressed not to be able to find a case to suit your needs from them and the build quality of the cases is very good.

This is a really sexy low profile case if its going to be showcased in the living and believe it or not it will support three 3.5 drives or two if you want to install an optical drive like you said you wanted to & it even has a spot for an internal IR receiver. I think if I was going to do another HTPC build this would be my choice.

If I salvage there new PSU and the CPU/Fan then my cost for a good setup shouldn't be as bad as buying a new plex server.

That being said I guess I will need to buy a win10 pro license.
