Need advice- replacing my HTPC

I finally am getting around to replacing my HTPC with an Nvidia Shield and an NAS to serve my movies.

I want something with 2 bays (perhaps 4). I am looking for a good cost vs performance I don't plan on using the NAS other than as a movie storage device and perhaps a time capsule endpoint.

Suggestions?

If you need 8TB useable I would recommend four bays so you have room to grow. Does the NVidia need anything special or do you just point it at a network share? Synology and QNAP are good choices. I recently moved back to Drobo, very easy to use.

For simply serving up files  - many routers have the ability to set up a USB drive as a Network share -

wont support any transcoding but I have used it as a Plex storage before

does impact router performance but for many home usage scenarios shouldn't be a bit issue

Look at the TS-451+ from QNAP.  I have the previous TS451 and love.  I have 5.5T of movies on it and is the repository for my plex server.  It will handle your time machine needs as well.

Is it worth a $110 price differential over the former TS-451?

You just point NVidia to a network share, Nothing special needed. NVidia now supports the Plex media server and will handle serving up 2-3 streams without a problem (So they say) I have not tested it yet but is on my list.
