gordan
It seems that 16GB ECC DDR3 UDIMMs are actually buyable now, in case somebody wants to give it a try: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Intelligent-Memory-IMM2G72D3LDUD8AG-B15E-C2750D4I-C2550D4I/dp/B00UMAJLJO Disproportionately expensive, though: £232 each at the moment, so £464 to get 32GB in the G8. According to this review: http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/6817/i-m-intelligent-memory-16gb-ddr3-udimm-memory-review/index.html some hacks may have been implemented by IM to improve compatibility with older systems when using the new, higher density memory modules
jmwills
For that price I put 128GB in my D-1541 board. That's a crazy price.
Drashna Jaelre
The question is does the Gen8 support 8GB DIMMs?
Metallus
The question is does the Gen8 support 8GB DIMMs? I think you wanted to say something else. I'm sure you are aware of it by now, that it already supports 8Gb DIMMs.
Drashna Jaelre
Yes, I meant the 16GB modules.
gordan
Officially - no. But we won't know whether they unofficially work until somebody tries it.
cattlerustler
Most of the optional CPUs seem to support 32GB, just don't have the cash to blow on taking a chance
Trig0r
We need someone who has another server that they can use that RAM in, but then drop it into the Gen8 to test..
Drashna Jaelre
Most of the optional CPUs seem to support 32GB, just don't have the cash to blow on taking a chance That may be the case, but the chipset may *not*. In fact, the chipset may be designed to hand 4 slots, and 8GB sticks in each, but only have two physical slots present. That's my point, and why it's an important question.
sunefred
That may be the case, but the chipset may *not*. In fact, the chipset may be designed to hand 4 slots, and 8GB sticks in each, but only have two physical slots present. That's my point, and why it's an important question. These are rank2 modules. From my understanding adding two of those to your system is electrically equivalent of adding four 8GB modules. EDIT: I will try these when they go down in price a bit. It is risky however since UDIMMS will not fit anything else that I can think of. Selling them if they do not work will be hard. EDIT2: Sorry, I have no clue if they are rank2 or not!!!! Without checking your link I just assumed you found a spot that sells the micron 16GB ECC UDIMM rank2.
