First Take on Luma Experience

Recommended Posts

Believe it or not, I'm rooting for Luma to work. Maybe it's naïve or maybe it's just because I like new things, but I've got Eero sitting here and Circle (Disney) in a box but I'm hoping luma will eventually give me the best of both. The question is, how long?

I shot some questions off to tech support to see what they say. As I'm writing I can't help but think the issues are purely dependant on firmware updates but I hate to leave my questions so easily dismissed.

Anyway, I'll keep sharing how it goes.

Personal Review: Luma 3-Pack White   Sorry, this won't be a crazy technical review. I'm a busy guy. Just wanted to provide my experience after having the Luma system for one day.   My Network

More Updates   This product definitely looks rushed out the door. I have not had any performance or connection issues yet. Still good in that regard and speeds are fast throughout the house. BUT, af

I read your review on Amazon, You are spot on with it and you did it in a nice way. We can only hope things will get better going forward because god knows its been a rocky start. Only time will tell.

I have gone back and forth with tech support this morning.  To their credit, they are fast in getting back to me.  The only suggestion so far is to power cycle the modem and if necessary the Luma devices.  Other than that, they are hoping the next firmware update will address the issues.  I also asked about the $25 gift card and their reply is below.

It helps that my diskstation notifies me when it goes offline.  It's wired to the basement Luma which is wired to the primary Luma.  The upstairs Luma is wifi only.  Do you think that could be part of the problem?  The hard wiring of Lumas, I mean?  Anyway, here's my diskstation log since last night:

  • Offline at 2:38 this morning
  • Back online at 3:57 AM
  • Offline at 7:02 AM
  • Back online at 8:14 AM
  • Offline at 8:24 AM
  • Back online at 10:09 AM
  • Offline at 11:20 AM
  • Online at 12:10
  • Offline at 12:10
  • Still offline as of now :-(

Here is the reply from tech support:

There is a firmware update planned to be released at the end of this month. For now the firmware updates will be pretty regular so there won't be any notices, but we'll offer notices in the future. The updates should clear up issues like this and will eliminate them since you could do away with your old router when port forwarding is added.

As far as the Amazon gift card, that will come separately.

Could you try putting both aux Luma's in wifi mode only and see if it still happens?   Sounds like they have issues with wired connections.  The firmware update at the end of the month will probably be a big one (hoping)

Wish there was a way to see the firmware version of the Lumas. The iOS app at least doesn't provide it. So no telling whether the units are being sent updates from Luma or if no updates have happened. Not suggesting there has been an update but just saying there's no way to even know.

The app (according to Apple's app store) is currently still at 1.0.1 which was release on June 16th so no updates there either since launch.

Aside from the two reboots that happened, and the lockups with the restricted users and their devices, everything else has been smooth.

That would be good to know, The Android app does not show the firmware version ether, I just check. Like you Luma has been running great for 6 days now.

Just some quick first impressions:

The set up was basically the same as the Eero. Using the app you add one at a time. Adding the unit in my master bedroom (3rd floor of a 1900 sq. ft. home) was a little difficult. It doesn't start the wifi the first go around so I had to unplug it and try again. Pretty minor. Unfortunately, that same device now reads as "offline" after running seemingly fine for its first 35 min of life. I'll give it some time and then reboot it.

The app is decent but far from fully cooked. Compared to the Eero, this thing is sparse. Some examples:

No way to identify connected devices with a simple name. Very confusing to navigate what is connected.

Filtering is present but very vague as to what qualifies as R, PG-13, etc. I was using Opendns on my last router and while it was not user specific, I knew exactly what type of sites I was blocking (firearms, porn, lingerie, etc. Luma tells me nothing. Is PG based on 1980's standards or 2016 because there's a huge difference.

Honestly, if these two things were fixed them the app would feel MUCH more useful.

There is also a tab with what seems to be a general filtering setting. There's no explanation, though, so I'm in the dark on what this does. Come to think of it, the app really doesn't offer any explanations for any of its options. I guess that's partly why this thing feels like it's still in beta mode.

The other omission that's already been covered is no pretty forwarding. That again is huge in my book.

The speed seems fine so far but we'll see how the next 24 hours play out.

By the way, my bedroom unit is back online.

Also, I'm running all android devices.

Thanks for sharing. What is the make/model of the Android device you used to setup Luma? I had a problem trying to setup Luma with a Samsung Note 4, After 3 tries I gave up and used a Samsung tablet and it worked fine. As for port forwarding I was told the soft date is July 26 for support.

Since my last post, the other luma (basement) dropped for a bit along with the upstairs device. A few minutes later, the basement device came back but the upstairs is still offline. Meanwhile, the laptop I'm working on and my son's tablet is unable to connect to the internet. Both show "connected" but neither can navigate to any web pages.

Yeah, this is the outage I mentioned. I had the same problem where my kids' devices were connected and could ping each other, but no Internet. For me it was only limited to users I set a filter rating on. Unfiltered users have never had a problem in the 1+week I have had the system online.

I have also unplugged ethernet from the second and third devices. I can't remember if I did that before the connection issue or after.

They didn't mention a soft date for ethernet backhaul did they? I would think that would solve a lot of the between-node communications issues.

Potentially but I really don't see much between it. To compare, I have these devices in the exact spots my Eeros were in for the past three days without issue.

Argh.

In other news, I tried to enter the IP of the main unit in my laptop's browser and was meet with a Luma security page telling me that I was not approved to visit that site but that I'd i wanted to, I request approval from the admin. This looks like the normal page that would show up if my kids tried to navigate to something inappropriate. I requested "approval" and expected something to pop up in my phone. However, nothing happened. No email, no pop up, nothing. It seems like a developer started the project and then left before finishing it.

One more thing I'll add is that my measured speed at speed test is easily half what it was worth Eero. I'm hoping that will stabilize by tomorrow but it's worth mentioning. Granted, the Luma speed test in the app is showing a crazy high speed that simply isn't confirmed by my two other testing methods.

How do you have Luma connected to your network? Your having some strange problems, Luma has been working well for me but I am only using 1. The other thing is there is no web browser admin page so you can't access the Luma by IP. They say its coming though.

Wow, this is not giving me the warm fuzzies about Luma.  Honestly I can't deal with poor reliability like this.  I rely on uptime for work, and I simply will not tolerate stuff like this for long.   Please keep us updated on if things improve, and thanks for the info so far!

Welcome to the forums!

This is the growing pains of a new product and people that want to be on the cutting edge of tech and be first in line for new releases have to be prepared for bugs. Luma is not the only company that start out with new products that have bugs, They just need time to sort them out and I believe Luma will get there. You say you "rely on uptime for work" You do know this is a product for homes not commercial?

I work from home in the IT field :)    And yes, I know there will be some bugs, but I expect basic uptime.  Wifi is wifi, for the most part.  I expect bugs in some of the features, but I expect 99% uptime in the wifi itself.

Luma told me yesterday on the phone that Ethernet backhaul was active on release, I told them your problem in that you did not think it was working and they told me to tell you to reset Luma and try again. They said if you still felt it was not working you should call them 800-684-5862

Please keep us posted.
