Switch Recommendations

Recommended Posts

What switches are people using?

I'm after a 16-24 port gigabit switch (rack mountable)

Not overly bothered about vlans, but it would be nice I guess.

No need for PoE.

Any reccommendations?

Thanks,

I have liked my 'cheap' smart switches, netgear gs108tv2. but now my main switch is a tplink T1600G-28TS.

for my subnet that extends outside I have a couple "iron" dell powerconnect 2216's that are 10/100.

I like the new Dell PowerConnect X series. Plenty of bandwidth, non blocking, iscsi capable. POE is a cheap option to choose at purchase time. I've deployed the x1008/p all the way up to the X1052p with great success. The 52 port has 2 10 gig sfp+ ports too

I'm using a NETGEAR GS724T switch.  Gigabit, managed, vLAN support, 24 ports. And pretty cheap, used.

TL-SG2434  Gigabyte, managed, vLAN, 24 ports.  There is a POE version (expensive) but who needs 24 POE ports so I just add a 4 port POE to hang off it for cameras.

I agree with you, The Netgear line of smart switches work very well and give you a comprehensive set of L2 features. They come in 8,16,26,50 port models.

I have this same switch and for rack mount I would recommend the GS724T but for desktop I would highly recommend the GS108Tv2 if you need L2 features. Can't go wrong with either one.

Besides the two Netgear options above I almost for got about the new Netgear 'Click Switch' that I also own and works very well, Link aggregation is only available on the 16 port model. This switch gives you many mounting options as well. Just another option for you, All three Netgear switches perform very well as I own all of them.
