There is no limit to the size of the SATA drives. Once you go beyond support for 2TB then the next cap is absolutely huge and we are not going to hit it for a long time.

So i could basically rock 24gb + ssd on the optical drive with no problem. I wonder if it would cope with the extra heat.

You'll be fine..

Largest single drive I have in mine is a 6tb WD-Red, I then have 3 4tb drives in there as well as 2 SSD's and an optical drive so 24tb and an SSD will be fine, as for extra heat I also have a P222 in there and a Xeon 1260....

We haven't even gone the full gamut.

Gen8 Microserver with P222 RAID card. 4 x as large of internal drives as you want.  4 x as large of internal drives as you want in a Sans Digital TR4XB enclosure.

Add the SchoonDoggy drive bracket and keep the B120i enabled, and you could put four 2.5" short-stacks, or two fuller-height 2.5" 1TB mechanicals.

Truly, you can probably get two channels of four 8TB drives, plus another four slim SSDs, capacity of probably 1TB each.  So in theory (if you didn't RAID anything for redundancy) 52TB of storage.

WD Reds run very cool as drives go
