Only using Defender. Turned it off: but still no luck.

Could it be an issue using an MS account as Administrator?

Trying to decipher some log files to see if they can enlighten the situation

There's your issue.  The server has no knowledge of the MS account.  The account you have on the Server that used to be your local Admin account should work, or you need to create a local account on the client that is also on the Server.

Are you trying to install the Connector using the Server Admin account?

jmwills - You could very well be on to something however couldn't the OP just add the username & password in the 'Credential Manager' for a valid user account on the server and call it good? This way he can still use his Microsoft account to login to his computer and everything should just work. See below for links-

That's what I do with my wife's laptop. I have an account setup on WS2012R2E with a strong password and she has her regular account for logging into her computer.

Admin of the client; not the server

Admin of the client; not the server

In 'Credential Manager' Enter a valid username & password that is already setup on the server.
