B120i hot swap or not?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have configured the built in B120i in my Gen 8 as RAID 1 with two WD Red drives.

I understand the system isn't "hot plug" (as in adding new physical drives while powered), but I assumed (perhaps wrongly), that you could hot swap 'failed' drives. So, with the array running, I pulled one of the drives to simulate a failure. The system LED showed flashing amber, then flashing red, and the system crashed - in that, I could ping servers but not SSH in, anything I/O related just stalled.

I replaced the drive, power cycled the server and got the message "Replacement drive(s) detected OR previously failed drive(s) now appear to be operational" and press F2 to continue.

Did I do something wrong?  Surely it should not crash if you pull one drive?

The array was created from scratch and had been running for a few days before I did this, so I would have thought the array would be in sync.

thanks

B120i isn't hotswap or hotplug. You need something like a P222 for that.

Ok, thank you, so in a normal drive failure, we should still expect the system to keep running? or crash and we shut down the server to replace the drives?

thanks

I wouldn't expect it to crash (assuming RAID 1), but you definitely have to power off the server to replace the faulty drive. The B120i is not hot *anything*.

great, thank you. I ask only as I guess it's conceivable that a drive could fail in such a way that it completely disappears from the controller as if it was hot-removed,  and so I wonder if it would consider this a 'hot removal' and crash in such a way

Has anyone experienced any real failures with the B120i?

B120i has support for hot plug, who says it doesn't, look at https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docLocale=en_US&docId=c03761790

hot swap requires a managed drive cage, minimum power off / on drive
