Power Use

I have a second brand new Microserver Gen8 that's coming into service

as i upgrade it im going to document its power use for myself

maybe people will find this info interesting so will post here

at the moment its just setup with the boot drive my spare 2gb stick from my other gen8 and a clean install of windows 10 pro

In the future it will have an E3-1230v2 upwards fitted (depending what comes along cheap)

16gb of ram boot 2.5" replaced with ssd more hd's etc

as things go in i will update this thread

Next time i have my Main Gen8 down i will test its power use also

EU 200W PSU
Intel® Celeron® CPU G1610T @ 2.30GHz
2 x 2GB HP DDR3 1600 @ 1333

2      Good, In Use     HP SmartMemory      669237-071      DIMM DDR3     2048 MB     1600 MHz     1.5 V     1     UDIMM

1 x 32gb Samsung Micro SD
3 x Gigabit Ethernet

AHCI Mode

CPU OS Controlled

Powered down 5w/6w
Idle in windows 21w/22w
CPU Fully Loaded 34w/35w (Prime 95 in-place large FFTS)
Idle in windows Marvell 9230 24w/25w
Idle in windows HP LSI 9217-4i4e (LSI SAS2308) 30w/31w

To Surmise

Marvell 9320 adds 3w (No Connected Devices)

LSI SAS2308 adds 9w (No Connected Devices)

13w difference between load and idle

Things to remember when in an idle state in windows

cpu is idle, ram is idle, north bridge is idle, south bridge is idle

prime 95 should load atleast the cpu/ram/north bridge

so of that 13w difference at a stab

7w or so will be cpu under load

3w or so will be ram under load

3w or so will be bridge's under load

I run 4x seagate NAS drives + 1x intel x-25-v 40gb SSD + i3 3240t and draw 43 watts idle at the wall with whs I can't get the thing to draw more than 90w at the wall with synthetic benchmarks,

I have the Xeon version - E3-1220L v2, 8GB of RAM, MSI N210-MD1GD3H/LP video card (it's connected to the TV), Windows 2012 Server on a Kingston V300 120GB and 4 HDDs: Seagate SV35 2TB & 3TB, WD 30PURX and HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 4TB. I use this thing as a NAS/torrent box/media player. While it's idle in Windows (if you can call "idle" seeding almost 400 torrents) the power usage is around 50 to 60 watts. The peak usage is somewhere around 110 watts, but I've yet to find out when/where. I don't use it for anything "thirsty" at the moment and during the boot procedure the max. usage usually goes up to around 70-80 watts.

Something interesting i just noticed on Windown 10 Pro atleast

RDP in 27/28w

RDP Closed 33w/34w

iLO Remote signed in 27/28w

iLO Closed 27/28w

There's something eating 6w if you leave an rdp session logged in but disconnected

the second you remote in with ilo and log in to the desktop it drops to 27w/28w

the same with rdp

the second you close rdp it goes back up to 34w

after a few mins of closing iLO it goes back to 34w

as soon as windows thinks the pc is idle its upto something

thats eating 6w

This isnt anti malware as its disabled by polcy

Shouldnt be cortana as thats blocked and disabled

all drives where defraged an hour or so ago

Whatever it is that it's doing, it will settle down once it's finished. I'm a bit surprised to see compressed memory kicking in for a machine with 16GB RAM. Have you changed a lot of the defaults (you mentioned you disabled anti-malware in group policy)?

It does seem to have settled down it ended up with about 3 hours of cpu time then stopped

with regards changes
