Blue Coat has a free product for home use too.

http://www1.k9webprotection.com/

It is available for more than just PCs too.

Never heard of them & not interested, I don't think they can compete with a company like Sophos. Thanks for the info.

Blue Coat is one of the largest and most respected web filtering companies in the world. You've heard of Websense? Think MORE expensive. Sophos is a baby's toy compared to Blue Coat.

https://www.bluecoat.com/

Truth is, Sophos cannot compete with Blue Coat.

For what it's worth, I've been an information security professional since 1997, transitioning from being "just" a network and systems engineer for years before that. I've had my CISSP since 2003 (it's only 5 digits long) and I've had my CISA since 2005. This is my job, and I do it for very large companies.

If you don't trust me, look at the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Secure Web Gateways. Blue Coat up in that top right section? Sophos down in the bottom left?

https://www.binat.net.il/images/stories/bynet/www-gartner2015.pdf

If I bring something up here that's InfoSec related, it isn't to belittle anyone or steer someone wrong. I'm trying to help folks out.

Blue Coat's tool is free, and it is for more than just computers. Most kids today use tablets or phones to get on the internet, and protecting at just the PC will not be enough.

Thanks for the info and I guess I stand corrected. Sophos is no slouch either though, This is an interesting read https://www.sophos.com/en-us/press-office/press-releases/2004/06/pr_us_20040622oemblue.aspx and this http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20090211005409/en/Blue-Coat-Integrates-Sophos-True-File-Type

Seems both Sophos & Blue Coat are sharing each others technology.

I could not find a link to the Blue Coats free tool, Could you provide that? Sorry never mind I found it in you post above.

No problem. Glad you found the link. I run Sophos UTM9 for my firewall duties, so I don't have anything against them. They wouldn't be my choice in the corporate world, but I'm pretty happy with how it has worked for my home use. I like to be able to turn on geoblocking, ad blocking, etc., and Sophos UTM lets me do that.

Thanks for the link. My son downloaded an app for Minecraft skins. You couldn't download them directly, they wanted an e-mail address.

Made him take that app off immediately. He's only 7 and I'm sure things will only get worse.
