Hi Guys,

I have had my server for a few year and noticed that my drives are getting full.

I would like to buy some new ones but am confused about what to put in.

Currently I have 2x 2tb, 1x 250gb and 1x 150gb running on WHS 2011.

The 250gb is the System drive.

Is it possible to change the 150gb for a 4tb?

i read a few articles that you have to flash the bios etc.

is this still the case just for adding the 4tb?

Any help is highly appreciated.

I would update all of the firmware/BIOS to the latest versions. You should be able to run a 4TB drive in the N54L. Are you planning on cloning the 150GB to the 4Tb or restoring from a backup?

Hi schoondoggy,

Thank you very muchfor your reply. Can you please explain how I can update the firmware and bios?

Not sure what to do with the 150BG.

How would I clone that to the new 4Tb?

Thanks again.

Is the 150GB drive in a pool or just a data drive? If it is just a data drive you can clone it with Acronis or Macrium. The easiest way to get the latest BIOS is to go to the the HP ftp site. I am working from my phone and can't find the link. I think it is listed in Links in the forum.

Hi, it's a separate HDD but there is nothing important on it and I might be able to copy it onto on of the new ones. I'll have a look online for the hp ftp link.

Thanks so far

  • 4 weeks later...

Ok, after a long wait I finally decided to flash my bios.

The new version is bios id: 041 and bios version is 10/01/2013 - I hope this is the most up to date.

Can I now insert the 4tb and WHS2011 will detect it as a 4tb?

Thank you very much in advance,

WHS2011 will detect it as 4TB without any issues. You can put Shared folders on it.

You cannot use it as the Server Backup Drive unless you want to waste 2TB of disk space.

Also you will need to use something other than Windows Server Backup to back it up due to the 2TB limit for backups in WHS2011.

Thank you so much for your reply.

I will go ahead and buy one and test it.

I'm using crashplan and a USB3 HDD for the back up.
