Family safe networking

Recommended Posts

After listening to the last podcast I thought I would share what we are doing for providing networking for our 10 year old.

We have a main network, cable and WIFI, named Skynet, it is has no filters and connects to all of the computers. My wife's and my deveices are configured to Skynet. Onto Skynet I connected a old router and created a second network called Catnet. On the Catnet router I configured it to use OpenDNS. On the OpenDNS site I turned on all of the filters. All of the WIFI devices that the 10 year old use are configured to Catnet. I have opened a couple of domains on OpenDNS that the filters were blocking. I'm doing that on a case by case basis.

I also setup on the OpenDNS on the PC and MAC, in addition to the built-in parental controls, that the kid uses. All of the computers have individual accounts for each user.
