Clunt
Hey all, I have a well specced G8 with Xeon 1265L (noctua HSF) 16GB Ram P222 card (noctua fan) 4x4tb WD reds 2x Samsung840 SSD's External SAS box 5 bay (will have a mix of old disks to back up primary array) I'm wondering what the best way to utilise it all would be. My needs are a -File share for 4k videos among other assorted personal data -serving files to multiple instances of Kodi (only 1 is 2160p other 2 are 1080p) -Owncloud or similar -roku/itunes library -Photo library -Mediacentermaster or similar -torrent duties -?additional needs over time What software would you use to accomplish this? I'd looked at FreeNAS, but since I've got the P222 card it I thought ZFS not be the best solution?? What would you do if this was in your house? Is it worth running Server2012? Any opinion would be much appreciated. Cheers
gordan
Install Linux. Use ZFS (at the very least n+2 redundancy). Put the HBA into JBOD mode for ZFS. Plex works well for media serving.
schoondoggy
If you go with ZFS you may want to swap out the P222 for a LSI based card that supports JBOD or pass through. The P222 will work for ZFS, but I think the JBOD cards are a better fit. From the list above, have you considered running ESXi and running everything on that? You can pickup an HBA a lot cheaper than a p222.
