Expand single disk book array in ODD to Raid 1 in future

Hi All - quick question:

I know for a single SSD in the ODD bay I need a floppy power to sata power adaptor, and can use the existing SATA cable up there for data (I think? I have spare SATA cables if needed). I plan to run this off the B120i- I'm getting a SmartArray p222 to connect the backpane.

I would eventually like to add a second SSD in the ODD bay in the near future, also off the B120i and would like not wipe the existing single disk, and create a Raid 1 array for redundancy. I will be running Win2012R2 off this boot array.

Is this possible, and how do I go about it? I plan on ordering my Gen8 this weekend. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: WOOT, no longer a 1 post wonder!  :D

You'd have to image it or similar, create the array and then put the data back.

Hmm.. seems it may be possible (no idea how risky it is though!!)

Where are you going to run the 2nd disk in the ODD from though? There are no more spare SATA ports other than the bays.

nvm, I read again you are going to use a P222. I guess you could get a mini SAS to SATA fan out.

You can't create something like a single disk degraded array?

EDIT: That seems kinda like a pain in the ass. Its $45 for a second 120gb SSD, not worth the hassle.

So, what do I need to power TWO SSD's up there?

For power you could use one of these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/351343337679?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

and one of these:

and one of these for the drives:

The B120i does not support RAID migration. You could try the steps listed in the link above, but be sure to have a good back up.

If you have a P222 you could temporarily put both of the SSDs on the P222 and do the migration from RAID0 to RAID1 them move the SSD's back to the B120i. This is not supported and I make no guarantees, but I have done it in the past. I have not tried it recently.

A cable like this will allow you to connect SATA drives to the external port on the P222:

Thanks Schoon. Everything is ordered :) Hopefully everything comes in before next weekend so I have all weekend to be up to my eyeballs in this.

I just got a second SSD, will go mirrored from the get-go.

I'm not planning on going with external disks quite yet - I only ordered 3x WD reds for this build, so I can expand to a 4th disk in the future. Once I fill that up, then I'll consider additional disks via an externas SAS enclosure.

I thought RAID configurations were specific to the controller and could only be moved from like to like? i.e. B120i to B120i or P222 to P222.

You can move RAID sets from a B120i to any P series. Moving from a P222 to a B120i is not supported.
