My Fanless HTPC NUC

Hi All, 

 

I built this HTPC a while a go having built a few other HTPC to get to the right one.

 

Goal:

Fanless

Small

IR remote compatible with Harmony Remote

Fast

 

i ended up with buying the Haswell i5 Nuc. 

 

NUC Haswel i5 Spec (besides the Standard)

 

120GB Samsung 840 Evo Msata

16Gb GSkills Ripjaw 2133Mhz and yes it runs at full speed 2133Mhz even though the spec for the Nuc says max 1600Mhz

Tranquil PC Fanless Case Abel H22 (I have the black one) - it is bigger than the Nuc but has an additional slot for another 2.5" drive

The HTPC is Based on Windows 10 and running Kodi 15.2 with Kodi Auto Launcher. It is compatible with Harmony remote so I can switch it on with remote etc.  I settled with a Logitech K400 Keyboard after trying so many different ones like Logitech bluetooth remote, Riri remote, various android Apps,

 

I will post some pics up when i get chance. 

 

I is very quick and can playback pretty much everything i have tested on it and i have a whole set of test media from H265, 10 bit, HD audio etc. 

 

The good thing about the NUC is that you can use it for something else if you dont want a HTPC i.e like ESXI can be installed on it or even Hackintosh compatible.

That's a nice build, Thanks for sharing. Boy that case is a bit pricey though it looks nice, Y did you decide to go this rout versus purchasing a Intel, Dell or Gigabyte NUC bare-bones? You definitely did the right thing by going Intel core i5 if your doing any kind of on-the-fly trans-coding for your movies.

I did not buy the whole unit from them just the case which I bought on ebay. So initially bought the Intel nuc barebone and then added my bits and the case being the last bit. I have the say the case just say premium quality, I did consider other fanless cases but loved the look of this one.

 

I went for the i5 for the extra power and 16gb ram was just me going over board.

 

I want to reduce the boot up time so I going to test out a openelec build on it soon.

Thanks for the pics. Core i5 is not overboard if your doing or planing on doing any Real-Time Trans-Coding of your media, Then the Core i5 is the sweet spot and if nothing else it gives you future proofing

I built almost the same exact HTPC except I used an Akasa fanless case and I love it. The case is one big heatsink. I have bought the Gigabyte version too, but it is more integrated into its case and I could not find a fanless aftermarket case that could use that motherboard so I bought a NUC and have had great success.
