If you are interested in testing the new Windows Home Server 2011 release from Microsoft I highly recommend it. Yes, it’s the dreaded screen shot post! Lots of screen shots of the process.
If you are running a version 1 connector you will have to un-install it. Don’t expect to re-install to that server until you get rid of the 2011 connector though. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Get the 2011 server up and running first. I would recommend creating a user as well. Then in a web browser navigate to: http://yourservername/connect
Much like version 1 of WHS you will download the connector file to run on your computer that you want to connect to WHS2011.
Run the downloaded file and it will attempt to locate your 2011 server.
30 Minutes or more? Whoa.
The process on my machine was around 5 minutes. That includes zapping all of these dang screen shots.
The process is also much cleaner, faster, and nicer looking than the old one.
The one thing I found that I didn't like is the Launchpad and Dashboard icons are not placed on the desktop. I'm so used to having those with version 1 that I want to see them on the desktop.
Now the bad news. Trying to reconnect to your v1 server will not work. At least it didn’t for me. You can still get to your shares on the version 1 server. It's a server after all. You just can't back up the PC to it. Let’s hope a workaround will be found for this.
