Synology announces BeyondCloud at CES 2015

    By Dave, in Blog,

Synology always has something for us when CES rolls around each January.  This year it's not a DSM upgrade or a new @ioSafe fireproof NAS.   This year Synology is announcing a new package called BeyondCloud.  Read on for more details and the press release from Synology.

I'll get my hands on this new system today at 10AM Pacific time when the doors of CES 2015 finally open.  Stay tuned to this site around 10:30AM Pacific for a live look at the Synology booth and the new BeyondCLoud package.

Synology Encourages Users to Live BeyondCloud at CES 2015, Allowing Users to Play, Collaborate, and Achieve Quicker and More Affordably Than Ever
Bellevue, Washington—Synology America Corp. the experts in network attached storage, today announced the release of BeyondCloud- the most affordable bundles for users to quickly access and share data, creating their own private cloud.  The new BeyondCloud bundles include both DiskStations and disks, and come pre-configured with both operating system and volume already installed; meaning they arrive ready to plug in and begin using.  Users can play, collaborate, and achieve.
BeyondCloud saves users both time and money.  The systems are pre-installed, storage is already allocated, so users can access their own private cloud almost immediately.  In addition, the bundles can cost less than the DiskStations and disks purchased separately.  Single disk packages are available in 2TB and 3TB configurations, and two-disk packages are available with two 3TB disks in a mirror configuration for peace of mind.
“We are extremely excited to be offering the BeyondCloud package,” said Jason Bonoan, Product Marketing Manager at Synology America Corp.  “Synology is well known for our award-winning DiskStation Manager and its feature set.  With this bundled package, users can quickly take advantage of this, and go beyond traditional public cloud solutions; providing the best value for the tech-savvy user.”
BeyondCloud provides a suite of multimedia packages preinstalled allowing users to quickly create their own private multimedia solution and play their media files at home or remotely.  Mobile apps allows users to carry terabytes of content, using DS photo+, DS audio, and DS video from their iOS, Android, and Windows Phone devices giving them access remotely.
BeyondCloud also empowers users to easily collaborate and share with friends, family, and coworkers.  Synology’s QuickConnect service allows for simplified remote access, so users can quickly share media and documents.  Cloud Station keeps documents up to date across multiple computers, and can be great for backups.  Note Station allows users to easily create and share digital notebooks and files.
BeyondCloud helps to achieve more with Synology’s award-winning OS, DiskStation Manager, allowing users to go beyond the constraints of the public cloud. Multimedia apps help users stay in control of their own collections.
Package prices should be released at:
    BC115j 1200 — $179.99
    BC115j 1300 — $239.99
    BC214se 2300 — $369.99

Find more about BeyondCloud at https://www.synology.com/en-us/solution/BeyondCloud

Availability: Mid January to mid first quarter.

    CES 2015

    By Dave, in Surface Geeks,

CES 2015 is around the corner. Well, it starts Sunday morning for me.  Keep on the look out for posts and tweets.  I won’t be as active as the major news outlets but I’ll have some stuff for you.

Join me on Sunday night 6PM Pacific.  That’s 9 for East Coasters and 8PM for Central dwellers.  I’ll be LIVE from CES Unveiled.  You can watch, chat, and direct me to find cool stuff.  That link to Unveiled is a list of all the vendors that will be present. Two years ago we saw a 4k TV for the first time, LIVE! It was a lot of fun.

The best way to stay involved with my CES antics is to follow me on Twitter. Don’t miss a tweet!  @mccabeio  I’ll try to send a post to all sites when I do anything live.  Watch the Blog and watch on Twitter.  Usually what happens is I get to Vegas and all my plans fly out the window because there is simply too much stuff to keep track of.  I would love to post it all but if I spend all my time behind the keyboard I’ll never see a thing!  I’ll try to get you cool stuff either way!

    Schedule

Monday night i’ll be at PepCom. Another big show full of vendors.

Tuesday at 10AM Pacific I’ll be opening the show at the Synology booth and hope to have something new to share with you!

Tuesday night from 6 to 10 I’ll be covering ShowStoppers for ANewDomain.net.  I’m not sure how they will use me but I’ll try to do something on Twitter or Live just for you guys.

Wednesday night i’ll be at a Western Digital party then moving over to an ADATA CyberPower party.

Thursday night is a first for me to cover “The Eggies” or the  NewEgg.com awards show.

All times in between I’ll be on the show floor and hunting down cool stuff.

See the full post over at mccabe.io.  I’ll also show you what is going in the backpack this year.  Much more than I planned on!

The last podcast had some audio issues that slipped by me.  I listened to a snippet prior to publishing and I just didn't catch it.  My apologies for the dual episodes.  This one is different though.  I left on the post show comments and antics on this audio.  Jim and I talk about anything and everything after the show is recorded so I left it on for you to hear.  If you listened to 273 already jump ahead to about 1:30:00 for the rest.

There are no shownotes on this post.  Check out the original post for that.  OneDrive vs. CrashPlan

    Twitter Changes for Surface Geeks

    By Dave, in Surface Geeks,

I've been working on my 2015 goals for several weeks now and one of them was to get control of my Twitter accounts and Identity online.  That may sound funny because I consider myself to be @SurfaceGeeks.  Two and a half years ago however, I considered myself to be @homeservershow.  I keep creating new properties, HomeAutoMationForums.Com and SmartWearForums.Com, and now TheGeeksNetwork.Com.  Who am I now?

If I had my choice I would have merged @homeservershow and @SurfaceGeeks into one account but Twitter doesn't let you do that.  They do let you change your twitter name though.  Once you do, the old one becomes instantly available in the pool of "whats left" in the Twitterverse.  I say that because obviously my name is no longer available.  In fact, throw a number behind it and it's probably taken as well.  I stopped checking at 12.

I also have this problem with e-mail so I'm chunking one big stone at the issue and here is what I came up with.

    mccabe.io

Yep, that's a real domain. It only has e-mail on it right now.  I may blog there someday, who knows.  I will use an e-mail address on that domain for my local life.  My G-Mail address today is absurdly difficult to pronounce let alone give to someone over the phone to sign my kid up for something.

    The Twitter handle is: @mccabeio

And, unbeknownst to you, you are now following @mccabeio if you were following SurfaceGeeks.  My ego would love for you to follow both but I understand if you must choose only one.

    @mccabeio

    Muh - kabe - dot - eye -  Oh

No doubt I'll soon be known as:

    Muh - kabe - eee - Oh

That's Ok. It will be me.

@SurfaceGeeks will be used to announce posts, podcasts, and forums posts.  @mccabeio will be me.  I will probably Re-Tweet all of my accounts with @mccabeio in the beginning until I find my voice.  I apologize in advance for causing a disturbance in way you consume twitter.  If it's Ok with you, please go follow @SurfaceGeeks right now.  That account is horribly lonely since I transitioned it.  Thanks, and see you on Twitter.

Thanks to @therealdarrencohen and @jwiskowski for guidance and friendship during my countless hours of bombarding them with new Twitter handles.

Microsoft Music Deals, A Hidden Gem

    By Dave, in Surface Geeks,

I've stated several times that Xbox Music is a great app and service to subscribe to but Microsoft has something new going on that could possibly blow your mind.  Sam Smith.  Ya, the guy with 6 Grammy nominations for 2015.  You can get his latest album for $1.99.

Music Deals is a free app for Windows 8 and Windows Phone that will allow you to browse through a catalog of free and highly discounted music including Sam Smith's album with the hit "Stay with Me."

Clicking the $1.99 buy button will take you to the Music app to purchase and it will download immediately.  If you are already using a music service you can simply take those newly purchased MP3's and upload elsewhere.

If I were you I would try the Xbox Music service as it's free for 30 days.  You can upload and they will match and you can use it on any platform.  I have a nice Android widget on my home screen.  They have an amazing library to stream once you are signed up.  Try it.

There are tons of free and discounted albums to browse through.  Get the app here.

Oh yeah, did you know Twisted Sister did a Christmas album?  Yeah, me either.

    Dave
We're talking crazy. Should you consider replacing your CrashPlan backup with OneDrive? Listen and help finish the conversation in the HSS Forums. I've got a ton of news items, new cloud services, Microsoft Band, portable batteries and streamers. Whew!

    • I throw this out every once in a while.  Is anyone interested in writing up "semi-formal" reviews here on the forums?  I say semi-formal because they don't have to be pro level, just a good attempt at telling the story about the gear.  Something you have purchased lately.  You don't have to go buy stuff, just incorporate what you have already have purchased.  Hit me up with any questions.  You never know where it will lead!

    • D-Link has dropped a couple of new products and additions to their lineup of smart home gear.  Hold on because there is a lot of gear!
Let's start with cameras.  D-Link has new Wi-Fi cameras, the Full HD Pan and Tilt Pro Wi-Fi Camera (DCS-8302LH) and Full HD Indoor and Outdoor Pro Wi-Fi Camera (DCS-8526LH).  These are not just new, and good looking cams, they can now perform people detection and glass break detection.  The new cameras also feature expanded ways for customers to save video, including ONVIF Profile S, which enables custom storage and streaming options to personal NAS devices, built-in storage microSD capacity up to 256 GB, as well as free and paid cloud storage options.

This year's camera models include both an indoor and an outdoor model. The outdoor model features a spotlight and siren that can be triggered when motion is detected, deterring potential intruders. The indoor model pans around to give a full 360-degree view of any room and tracks motion. Both include two-way audio.
Full HD Pan and Tilt Pro Wi-Fi Camera is the model (DCS-8302LH), available in Q2, 2020, and retail pricing will be $99.99.
Full HD Indoor and Outdoor Pro Wi-Fi Camera is the model (DCS-8526LH), available in Q3, 2020, and retail pricing will be $119.99.
One of my favorite products is Wi-Fi.  D-Link has a whole lot of new products coming including Wi-Fi 6, Mesh, Alexa and Google Assistant integration, IFTTT, Parental Controls, and more!

There are so many new SKU's that I can't make heads or tails of them!  I'm going to be speaking with D-Link more this week and will sort all of these out. I do want you to see all they are offering and what the release date and projected retail pricing will be.

    • RESET Merch Shop
Get ya Merch here!  I've created a T-Shirt shop with the famous RESET paperclip. I've pasted that clip on just about everything so you can wear it around town!  Cable bags, Coffee Mugs, T-Shirts, and more.

or you can get it it via

      Here is the main design.

Below is a part of the order that I put in!

The Heather Grey above is the Extra Soft version and it is awesome.  I highly recommend the softness!    The "Chili Red" is the Tri-Blend and probably my favorite feel and color.

This is the Zip-Up Hoody, Heather Indigo, Sponge Fleece, Men's, Large.  In my podcast I couldn't remember what style it was but it is Sponge Fleece. It's REALLY soft on the inside. Soft outside as well. The only problem is with the zip up hoody the logo is on the back. Regular hoody, it will be on the front.

    • OneDrive Personal Vault and expandable storage
Microsoft's OneDrive has a few new features and options worth pointing out.  Personal Vault and Expandable Storage.

Personal Vault is a protected area in OneDrive that can only be accessed with a strong authentication method or a second step of identity verification, such as your fingerprint, face, PIN, or a code sent to you via email or SMS.

Personal Vault gives you an added layer of protection for your most important files, photos, and videos—for example, copies of documents such as your passport, driver’s license, or insurance information—should someone gain access to your account or device.
Plus, this added security won’t slow you down. You can quickly access your important documents, photos, and files with confidence wherever you are, on your PC, OneDrive.com, or your mobile device.

Beyond a second layer of identity verification, Personal Vault also includes the following security measures:

Scan and shoot—Using the OneDrive app, you can scan documents or shoot photos directly into your Personal Vault, keeping them off less secure areas of your device, like your camera roll.
Automatic locking—No need to worry about whether you left your Personal Vault or your files open—both will close and lock automatically after a period of inactivity.
BitLocker encryption—On Windows 10 PCs, OneDrive automatically syncs your Personal Vault files to a BitLocker-encrypted area of your local hard drive.
Restricted sharing—To prevent accidental sharing, files in Personal Vault and shared items moved into Personal Vault cannot be shared.

Taken together, these security measures help ensure that Personal Vault files are not stored unprotected on your PC, and your files have additional protection, even if your Windows 10 PC or mobile device is lost, stolen, or someone gains access to it or to your account.

      Expandable Storage

If you are and Office 365 Subscriber you get 1 TB of OneDrive storage space with all the other Office goodies like Word, Excel, etc.  I know personally that I have gone over the 1TB limit and have always wanted to be able to add additional storage to my account.  Now you can!

Pick and option and keep on hoarding, errr, I mean saving! Cancel anytime, upgrade at any moment.

    • Ubiquiti adds new items to the Unifi Line including UAP Flex HD and the Unifi Dream machine
Ubiquiti has been busy.  There area ton of new items to recently released and I'm going to share two of my favorites.

The UAP Flex HD and the Unifi Dream machine. The Flex HD is a mouthful of descriptors like most of UI gear is.  It's a 2Ghz 2x2 MIMO, 5GHz 4x4 MU-MIMO, POE, Indoor/Outdoor, multi mount, mesh point that is no bigger than a can of Coke.

You will still need the Unifi controller although you can configure it with basic functionality with the Unifi App.  I've always found it's best to configure with your controller and then use the app as an add-on.  There are several mounting options that include sitting it on a shelf! That is something that Unifi has not had before unless you count the ceiling AP I have awkwardly mounted placed on top of a few books.  It can be found on the Unifi store for $179.

      https://store.ui.com/collections/wireless/products/unifi-flexhd

The Dream Machine is an altogether different beast that I hope lives up to its naming.  This is the gateway drug, for lack of a better term, to the Unifi world.  The starter kit.  It is an Access Point, Gigabit Switch, Security Gateway, and the Cloud Key all in one package.  The latter being the most significant as this is something that has deterred new users from getting started with Unifi.  Requiring new users to purchase a $100 item just to run the AP's has been somewhat of a roadblock in the past.  Granted, that is improving every year with the ability to run it in the cloud, on a NAS, a Pi, Docker, MacOS, and of course Windows, it is still a barricade to getting up and running when manufacturers such as Eero offer simplicity in an app.

The switch includes 4 LAN Ports and 1 WAN port.  All of which are Gigabit and security services such as IPS are rated at Gigabit speed. It's $299 in the Unifi store but I'm unsure how nicely it will play with other Unifi gear.  This may be a nice "first AP" with its built in Cloud Key if you can add additional units or other Unifi access points.
