Gift Guide for the Home Server Enthusiast

    Dave

I have a bit of advice for the tech enthusiast when it comes to receiving Christmas gifts.  You have to tell everyone EXACTLY what you want!  I even recommend publishing a list with part numbers and links to the sites that your gift can be purchased from.  Newegg, Amazon, etc.   Otherwise, a gift card works well.  Consider one of those Visa or Mastercard gift debit cards so you are not tied down to a particular store for your purchases. With that being said, lets move on to some cool gifts for a home server enthusiasts.

    SANS DIGITAL ST-SAN-TR5M-B 5 Bay SATA to eSATA (Port Multiplier) JBOD / RAID 0, 1, 1+0, 5 Enclosure (Black) hl101ax0pvtEIFMFHGIEGFJJFNOM- $184.99

Most of the server raid enclosures will work with WHS as long as they support the Port Multiplier function.  You will not want to use an enclosures built in RAID system as WHS will handle this task for you.

I would also love to have one of these as my primary drive in my PC.    Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - WD3000GLFS - $229.99.  They have come down from $300 and they are fast!  I wouldn't use them in my home server but it would be nice to have one for gaming and video apps.  There is a $30 rebate on this drive as well.

Thanks for the link to the HP Black & Grey External DVD Drive. I wasn't even looking for one but, I think it will fit in just right ontop of my MSS or HSH KPC 45

There seems to be a bug with the AnyDVD software that you can install through the My Movies Add-IN. If you restart the WHS with the HP Slime line External DVD drive connected ANY DVD will freeze up and can no longer be opened if you RMA into the server. The AnyDVD tray icon will also disappear. The only way that I have found to fix this is to uninstall and then reinstall AnyDVD. I don't have enough knowledge about computers to be able and nail down the issue. The drive works fantastic.

    • Let's start small with the definition. If you know about podcasts already you can skip ahead.

What is a podcast?  There is no set definition but in general a podcast is a voice recording on a subject that you can usually listen to however and whenever you want.  Let's break these down a little bit and that will also help define the term for you.

    • Here is something that wasn't planned but came to me while I was at Unveiled.  The Unveiled event was a little lackluster so I had a little fun with the DJI Osmo Pocket.  Take a look.

    • TP-Link's Wi-Fi 6 Routers
I talked with TP-Link about their AX series routers.  The Deco X10 is a Tri-Band mesh router that will come in a pack of two for $350.  I was told Q3 for release but if that sounds like a long time don't forget that we don't have anything that will talk with the AX standard yet.
It's a good looking box that I hope will perform well and have plenty of features.  I've read good things about the Deco series and there were a few good sales last year on the M5.  I really should test the M5!

Here it is.  Yes, it's huge! Not a hockey puck like the M5 is.  What do you think?
