New SSDs from OCZ
Cutting the Cord
Antenna - Monoprice has a nice selection of HD Antenna for you HD project. Which one you need depends on distance to source, weather, and distance to screen is also a factor. Michael chose this compact powered unit. Most will be fine with a slightly larger dual bow-tie style. For more remote locations a directional might serve you better. Higher is better when mounting and outside is always preferred to inside/attic
Alignment and Sizing – antennaweb.org is a great resource. They also sell them!
Wiring – Coaxial Cable is most common. For longer runs or multiple splits an amplifier may be needed. CAT5e or CAT6 for the network side.
Recording – The BYOB base system spec is the usual Core i3/H67 and 4GB RAM and a HDD(s) with sufficient recording/storage space. From there either a Tuner card or Network tuner to receive the broadcasts. Remember you need a separate tuner for each stream. If you want to go CableCard you’ll need a different style of tuner.
Home Integration (Frontend) – WMC is the only option for recorded TV, integrating plugins for Hulu and Boxee add ease of use. Adding plugins for additional management can create stunning and more family appealing interfaces such as MediaBrowser and MyMovies.
Extenders – while a Client HTPC can and does work. The XBOX 360 offers a lot more for a lot less. With the addition of the new TV partners with an XBOX Gold account. It provides a very compelling Set Top Box for the new Digital Home.
We’ll keep updating on the show as Michael continues to move towards this conversion.
