Vail Refreshed Public Preview Screen Shots

Microsoft has released the public preview of Vail today and I thought I would introduce you to it by showing a few screens of the console.

The following screen shot tour was done on a fresh Vail Refreshed Public Preview install.

The feature that I like.  Remove the OS drive from the drive pool.

HomeGroup in action.  Notice that it sees the HG on my network and is ready to join.

Lets add some drives to the drive pool

You can label your drive and give it a SATA port number or slot number so you can later identify it.

image

Looks like this one is coming out or use it for Server backups.

I think I’ll cancel at this point and remove this small drive.

Is Vail multithreaded?  I’m loading one drive to the pool and can still select other drives and do stuff.

Remove the OS drive from the drive pool.

How much storage do I have?

image

Where is the pie chart?

image

On the home screen I have a few tasks to take care of.  I want my green check marks!  The following screens are what shows up when you click the items underneath complete these tasks.

Configure media settings takes you to the the Settings tab.

image

Setup options for sharing

image

Setup Remote Web Access

image

Setup server backup.  This function requires an external drive to be attached and will stop if it doesn’t find any attached.

image

Get updates for other Microsoft products.

image

The other tab on the home screen is a convenience tab.

That’s it for the task list so let me show you something interesting.

image

In Computers and Backup, right click your server for a menu. Select View Alerts.

There looks to be a notification service for alerts.  Here you can setup your outgoing mail server and be notified of any alerts via e-mail.  That’s a nice touch and eliminates an Add-In I frequently use to get alerts via e-mail. Although the “Remote Notification” add-in for WHS version 1 is handy, I like the new ability to add multiple recipients for alert notifications.

This was a simple screen shot walk through of the product.
