The Home Server Show 98

In this episode we get in depth with all the recent news surrounding Windows Home Server, Vail, and Aurora.  John and Jim join me for all the news, the latest Add-Ins, and our featured guest is Andrew Edney.  Andrew and I dissect the recent Aurora announcement and what it means for Windows Home Server users.  When I miss a week it always seems the next show is “wordy” and lengthy.  Fair warning!

Great show! 1:28 is one of your longest podcasts. Nice. Gonna have a few beverages tonight on the second playback for the HSS Home Game.

Nice show. I think it was Jim who mentioned he could see the Drive Extender technology brought to other product lines. Just curious, why would you want/need that outside of server?

As a small business owner, I will take a look at Aurora and its integration with Microsoft Online services (utilizing Federated ID?). Most newly formed small businesses are going out today and acquiring Windows 7 Home Premium based PCs..which doesn’t support AD. InTune is one possible solution with its upgrade rights to Windows 7 Enterprise ($11/mo). I’d like to see something similiar with Windows 7 Professional instead. The potential here could be enormous if these upgrade rights included future Windows clients. One thing Microsoft should consider for Aurora is remote backup capability. With our business, we operate out of 3 home offices. It would be great if it would support remote backups..perhaps DirectAccess could play a role in enabling this.

    Some questions I have:

    - Will the Addon MarketPlace be the same for both WHS and Aurora? I’m sure most WHS targetted will run on Aurora but not vice versa due to AD integration. So there would need to be some way to specify the target OS(s) when publishing an app.

    - Can I run WHS and Aurora on my home network side-by-side?

    - What direction does WHS go after Vail? I mean, if business/enterprise class stuff is now in Aurora’s court and Media Center is no longer destined for WHS..where does WHS go from here. Should we be able to link a Live SkyDrive folder to WHS? Should WHS do more to automatically move files off PCs and into WHS folder shares (users, photos, music) based on age? Should WHS devices have integrated router/switch/firewall/dns?

    John,
Thanks for the comments and the questions. I will answer one and try bring the others up on the show this week.

I did bring up the idea of using drive extender on a Windows PC. I could see it as an option anytime a hard drive is close to getting full and the user is not necessary ready to move files off to storage. It could just be another option. I love options!

Thanks for listening to the show and be sure to listen to #99. You may get your questions read on the show!

    Jim
