The Home Server Show 63 – HTPC, Media Center, MyMovies, Media Browser and More.  We go over the usual, news, tweets, and what’s going on in the world and then Chris and I dive into HTPC and everything that surrounds the extender vs. HTPC battle.  We discuss our builds which are based on the Atom ION chipset and we also discuss ripping movies and using Media Center add-ins to view them.  I think this is the longest running show that I’ve published.  If you have questions or answers about this episode feel free to discuss them at http://homeservershow.com/forums/

Dave – What were you thinking? – Australia is never going to celebrate Thanksgiving – think about it – what is Thanksgiving celebrating? – it’s a US thing (and good on you all for celebrating it – enjoy)

and no we don’t have “Black Friday” sales (although we do call Friday the 13th Black Friday) – I think we’re like Canada (probably the British origins) and it’s Boxing Day that is our big sale time (although during the GFC there’s always sales on :-( )

Re the MediaSmart availability down here – we’re only get the EX490 and the StorageWorks X510 Data Vault here fromHP – and the word is the Acer Aspire easyStore H340 Home Server is coming soon too. No sign of the Lenovo or Fujitsu WHS systems

Hopefully the upcoming LX197 will have something to offer beyond that of the of its predecessor although its tough to imagine what that would be if HP maintains the same form factor and platform. One guess as to how HP might overcome this would be to use an ION based platform. Since ION’s have been able to deal with computationally intensive tasks like Blu-Ray decode it might boost the performance level of the Atom. Therefore perhaps the video subsystem which is traditionally unused in a Windows Home Server can be put to work with an updated HP video Converter.

Atom processors just are not that attractive so HP needs to start thinking outside of the box and address the price / performance issues of this series of servers.

you can’t go wrong with the hdhomerun tuners. they just work. I have 4 hdhomeruns, 8 tuners and they work great. Just follow the setup get lastest firmware from there site and you will be good to go.

On a recent episode, I recall a comment about why WHS bare metal restore wasn’t used to move a Windows install from a regular laptop hard drive, over to a new SSD drive the person had installed, instead choosing Acronis.

Taking a stab at why, perhaps the person had a smaller SSD drive than the original drive, a likely scenario, given SSDs small size. This could make WHS refuse to do the restore, even if the data should fit. For example, a 250GB drive with 50GB of data, WHS won’t let you restore to a new 80GB SSD drive (but Ghost will, as would Acronis likely).

Just a minor footnote, no biggie, thanks for the great show, always fun to listen!
