The Home Server Show 57 – Sniffles and Streaming
In Show 57 Jim, John, and I go over the latest Add-Ins and news for WHS users. I also have an interview with Neil Sharma of Twonky Media. I actually edited this episode so you won’t have to hear all of our goof-ups! Well, most of the episode. Also, take a look at forums.homeservershow.com. I put up a small set of forums in order to do some testing. This may be a better way to communicate information on posts, podcasts, homebuilds, etc. I don’t intend for these forums to be a tech support mechanism like WGS or MSS.net. Those guys have great forums. I’ve been looking for a spot to put all my homebuild submissions and I do think this would be a nice place to showcase them.

Hey guys,
Thanks a bunch for the great comments on the PHP and MySql Add-Ins. I have a few comments I'd like to share. Dave mentioned that these add-ins were more technical, and John stated it well that these two add-ins are the building blocks for more features down the road. Rather than thinking of these being difficult, technical add-ins, they are intended to be one-click installs that take away the difficulty and make it easy for users to get vastly expanded functionality from their home servers.
And as you asked, note that Nigel is hard at work on wrapping the more popular PHP applications into WHS Add-Ins, so you can look forward to WordPress, Gallery, and other apps coming in the near future. Once these are available as one-click installs, users won't need the technical knowledge of configuring php, mysql, and wordpress, they'll just install the add-ins and then write their blog.
I'm sure Cougar would welcome input on what PHP apps people would like to see available.
Good point Yakuza. The PHP and MySQL Add-in's may be more technical behind the scenes but the fact that they have been made into an easily installed Add-In is the real point to dwell on. Nigel is opening many new doors for WHS and I think it's awesome.
I guess you heard us discussing WordPress and Gallery2? That would be my wishlist as well as a way to sync a MySQL database between two servers. I've seen SQLyog Enterprise but never tested it.
Remember MSWHS.com going down for a few days? If you had an exact duplicate of your wordpress on a backup server you could make a DNS change to the backup until you could work out the issues on your main server. There are other issues to overcome and it might not serve big sites or be as zippy as others but at least you would have a means to communicate via the site.
BDBB is a good add-in and I only wish I was running it when I had a hard drive failure in my WHS. Only natural to choose it as Add-In of the Week.

Great show Dave, and thanks for the mention! You're both absolutely right, these are a pain to install manually for some and "One Click" installs are so much easier so I'm glad you liked them. It's been my ethos for a while to try and keep the server as simple as possible, whilst some of us are happy to tinker with servers I'm concious this platform is aimed at a much wider audience.
As Alex says; i've been looking at Gallery and WordPress and I'll be releasing something on one of these really soon.

Dave, MySQL has replication features but I've not used those. For backing up my websites I use automysqlbackup.sh to do a full dump of the database, and then rsync it down to another server.
