The url for SyncToy 2.0 that you mentioned in show #26 is long and I have posted a link for it on my site. Thanks for the mention.

You mentioned that BitDefender will break the MediaSmart server. I got my hands on a copy and gave it a try. Your right. I have the home built VGA cable so took the chance. First there is the Registration Wizard that pops up that asks that you create an account. I could also see that the network connection say Limited or poor connectivity. I have 2 Gigs of ram, but it brought my server to a crawl. Task Manager should 100% CPU use and Vsserv.exe was running full tilt. It's just like the McAfee addin. Also I was geting a red status light and a 'Home Server Transport Service' popup every few seconds. Trying to stop Vsserv.exe and uninstall was very slow also.
When I tested McAfee's Total Care package, it did the same thing. It added a browser interface and a Firewall interface that disables traffic not the newtwork card until you allow it. But if you don't have the VGA cable to allow this, you can not get in through Remote Access.
Bit Defender should clean this up.
Thanks Diehard. I knew it had to be something that was taking control of the network connection prior to activating the product. I needed to get the show out since I had already delayed it once. I was going to test it on a home build but would have taken another day or so.
It's a shame that it does that. I'll have BD on a future show to go over these issues. BD and McAfee have good PC products but for WHS? Not looking so good.
Do the other anti-virus products for WHS bring it to a crawl?
Thanks for the link to SyncToy 2.0 Jim. I have put the link in the show notes. I didn't put any links in the show notes like I usually do due to time constraints. I won't do that again!
Thanks everybody and would love to hear your comments on anti-virus products for WHS and your experiences.

Great Show! keep up the great work.
Please enter for the Bit Defender drawing.
Thanks,
Hi Dave.
So far Avast has been my prefered choice. No problems or slow downs.
Right now I'm testing F-Secure Home Server Security 2009, no problems with the install and it's not slowing down my server.
I found the bit defender review useful and would like the followup for running in 512M and overcoming the startup issues
I have a 5-copy license for the Bit Defender Anti-Virus product and have xp and vista clients. Thought about putting the 5th copy on WHS, but sounds like I might want to wait on that until more info is available on the issues and whether or not the AV product itself is affected. I am also runnning 512MB memory on WHS.
Put me in for the drawing.
Thanks
Thanks for a great show. I have added this to my google reader podcast rotation. I'm new to the home server as of 10 days ago. It has been a bit of a struggle to get all the computers in my house configured for back up. I got the last laptop backup working as a wired rather then a wireless connection. I thin there is a security/sharing issue on this windows xp sp2 laptop. I managed to successfully configure a scheduled task to download a podcast daily. I now am trying to get all the separate itunes instances on each computer to run via the server. I have instructions on how to do this, and will try over the Christmas break.
I would like to enter the bitdefender drawing. Thank you.
Great Show! I like the show I was looking for online backup solution. I'm a backup freak
I have my reader up and running. Has anyone heard news on OneCare? I've had my home server almost 6mo I've configured it as an EMAIL server FTP Server and as of tomorrow its getting its own deadicated web connection.
Thanks for the great podcasts Dave.
Sign me up for the Bitdefender giveaway please.

Wandering about the bitdefender and the giveaway. I am interested.
Have a frankenbuild, 3.55 Tb of data, putting all movies, music and family photos for the future on the WHS.
Request that you do a show on frankenbuilds….
Thanks.
Love to take a look at BitDefender! Count me in the drawing. Thanks!

Dave thanks for a great show
and
BitDefender thanks for the subscription.
Bitdefender,
Wanted to thank you guys for offering up the product and allowing Dave to discuss on your show. No plenty of friends who are always looking for alternatives to ancient players in the protection market.
Dave,
Great show and thanks to BitDefender for offering the the product as a give away. The two of you make a great team.
Great show as usual
. I enjoyed the review of BitDefender. Please enter me for the drawing.
I have to say I'm not a big fan of Bitdefender. I paid for a year's subscription for my server and PCs and am not at all satisfied. When I installed it on my server, I experienced the same problem with RDC which has been described – I was ok since i have a home built but I'd have been really pissed if i had a commercial server and had to rebuild (unacceptable!). The performance was severely degraded on my server after installation – from ~50MB/sec to ~12MB/sec for file copies to the server. I also experienced random crashes (Bitdefender services not responding) on my PCs on a frequent basis. The network management features have never worked properly.
I've started switching my network over to Avast which is much less feature rich but at least it's stable and the there is little performance hit on the WHS.
Just my $0.02…
Great show Dave. I look forward to it each week.
Thanks to BitDefender for the free subscritption.
