The Home Server Show 195

We are back with a packed episode this time. We start out with the 2nd Annual Meetup date and details.  You don’t want to miss it!  I’ll be talking a lot about Synology and differences between 2 and 4 bay units.  Synology also has a new box coming out and we talk about it a bit.  CrashPlan and SkyDrive are also a part of the conversation as well as Windows 8 tablets and phones that are headed our way. We also briefly touch on LastPass and 2 factor authentication.  Enjoy, and don’t forget to check the video out at youtube.com/homeservershow.

Don’t forget the video! They YouTube of this episode is live on my channel:  http://youtube.com/homeservershow

Twitter follower asks, why is 4 bay Synology more expensive than the 2 bay?

Synology Comparison

$449 DS411  Higher CPU yields much more performance, users, etc for this price. Definite small business target for this one.
$369 entry level 4 bay DS411j
$209 DS212j

The new DS213 2Ghz processor, 512MB RAM, USB 3

Comparison chart of  three 2 bay units.

Synology has a nice article on how it compares to a “home server.”

The date you put the APC in service is less important than the date that the unit was manufactured.
Here is my APC buying process.

The APC serial number gives the date of mfg. Ignore the first number and letter. The next 4 digits are the year and week of manufacture. When you buy at Frys, look for the unit with the most recent date of manufacture. I try for no older than six months. The lead acid batteries don’t like to sit without being charged for more than six months or so. My batteries usually last three years from mfg. date but if the UPS sat before putting in service, it will not last as long.
Also, a higher VA(watt) unit will not necessarily run a load longer than a lower VA unit. What affects the runtime is the number of batteries in the unit and the amp-hour rating of the batteries. As long as the unit is rated to handle the peak load, your runtime is dependent on the batteries.

WD Velociraptor vs SSD
Wins in the write tests.  SSD wins in READS.
I’ve never owned a Velociraptor but have used a few in customer installations.  Good 3 minute video talking about them and the RED drives.
