Synology Network Attached Storage DS1511 and DS211
I had a chance to stop by and talk with Synology while I was at CES 2011. Synology has been in the NAS business since 2000 and they have several products that could be very attractive to potential home storage customers. I had my eye on two products in general. The DiskStation DS211+ and the DiskStation DS1511+.
Here is the DS 1511. I could use stock photos but would rather show you what I saw on the show floor.

Another note on it’s backup capabilities may sound familiar to you.
DSM 3.0 comes with complete choice of desktop backup. Backing up files on your computer has never been easier. What’s more, Synology Time Backup takes care the files on your DiskStation by creating multiple backup versions and allowing you to roll back to previous ones anytime you want to.
No mention of a bare metal restore option. When looking at it I saw a well built and sturdy device that would provide a great NAS solution for any business or home. The management interface was outstanding and deserves a deeper look to explain all there is to offer with it.
You can get an idea of the features from this shot alone. The downside would be the price. It clocks in at $899 on newegg.com. That might be a bit steep for a home user so let’s scale down to the DS211.

The DS211 is two drive design as seen in these photos from the CES show floor. It includes the same software OS and features as the DS1511 at a smaller price point. The actual price varies depending on drives included but can be found at around $399. I will clarify this pricing in a future post.

hi, i have the 1511+ and have all my media on it. I watch movies on my tv through the LAN 2 port but find it most frustrating not to be able to have the rewind and fast forward controls to enable me to move through the files. are these 'standard' medi operations not possible when streaming from the DS 1511+?
