Synology to Showcase DiskStation Manager DSM 5.0 at CES 2014

It’s looking like Synology will have another great presentation at CES.  Every single year I’ve covered Synology and CES they have produced a big announcement the first day of the show.  This year it’s DSM 5.0.  DiskStation Manager has grown leaps and bounds since I’ve started using it but Synology states that this new “streamlined interface, ” “new and enhanced features,” is their most significant update in the past few years.  That’s big folks because DSM has seen some big improvements in the past years.  Think Cloud Station, and Package Manager.  I can’t wait to get my hands on it when it rolls out in the next few weeks.  Stay tuned right here for that news!

Although I can’t make it to CES this year due to snow and travel issues, ioSafe will be back in the Synology booth.  I regret that I won’t be able to see the multi-disk, fireproof/waterproof chassis first hand but hat gives me more time to talk about it on the next Home Server Show Podcast!  A 5 bay ioSafe powered by DSM! Nice!

Here is what Synology had to share with me that is being announced at CES.  Congrats on DSM 5.0!

Synology to Showcase DiskStation Manager 5.0 at 2014’s International CES Get Ready To Rethink Storage in a Whole New

Bellevue, Washington—Synology America Corp. is excited to preview the next DiskStation Manager operating system, DSM 5.0 at the 2014 International CES. The preview will give users a first-hand look at DSM’s streamlined new interface. It will also provide an opportunity to demo several new and enhanced features, in what is sure to be the most significant update to the DiskStation Manager in years.

QuickConnect is now front-and-center to the installation process, and easier than ever to configure. Create – or import – a QuickConnect ID, and password. As soon as a volume is created, it can be accessed remotely via browser or across all iOS, Android, and Windows Phone apps; anywhere a data connection exists. No complicated router configuration is required.

Synology’s Cloud Station is real-time, private cloud storage, and cross-device synchronization, without recurring fees. In DSM 4.3 Cloud Station brought the ability to sync specific files, file-types, and folders. DSM 5.0 beta stretches Cloud Station’s functionality even further by allowing users to sync between multiple Disk and RackStations. Now it’s possible to keep data at work and at home current with one Cloud Station account.

Package Center has always been at the heart of the Synology platform. DSM 5.0 makes package management seamless with optional automated updates. Application icons can also render application badges which augment icons with informative push notifications when activities have been completed, or when apps need special attention.

Additional features include:

• Hybrid Cloud Syncing, with Google Drive and Dropbox
• Facebook & Google+ sharing of files and folders
• YouTube uploading straight from PhotoStation
• Customizable status widgets
• 4K capable interface with touch input, for the next generation in display technology

Notable Business Features:
• Scale out Storage Cluster enabling businesses to expand from TBs to PBs
• Central Management System with unified monitoring, remote administration, and policy based configuration
• Robust data protection including snapshot manager and more

Synology is proud to be joined at CES by: Egnyte, and ioSafe. Egnyte and Synology combine their award winning solutions and provide an enterprise-grade file-sharing integration package. ioSafe will be introducing a new higher capacity fireproof/waterproof storage solution, based on the Synology DSM platform.

“We are extremely excited to be previewing DSM 5.0 at this year’s CES” said Thadd Weil, public relations manager of Synology America Corp. “DSM continues to push the boundaries of Network Attached Storage beyond conventional expectations. Whether you are an enthusiast wanting easy access to all of your media, or a small enterprise looking for robust – and surprisingly affordable – scale-out storage, DSM 5.0 is liable to ‘wow’ users with a range of powerful features. Get ready to rethink storage.”

The DSM 5.0 public beta will be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Outstanding! Actual integration of the platform is a welcome change. Hopefully they will address the insane amount of port forwards.
